| jawilderari's Full Review: Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area |
For me the name "Delaware Water Gap" didn't offer any hints about what to expect from the National Recreation Area. What exactly is a Water Gap anyway? In this case, the "gap" is the place where the Delaware River has cut its way through the Appalachian Mountains, creating a scenic gorge along the New Jersey/Pennsylvania border. Most people won't find much here to compare with more spectacular national parks, but in a state with as few scenic natural areas as New Jersey, the Water Gap is welcome relief. Overall, it is a pleasant place to spend a day, or a weekend, with dozens of good hiking opportunities, the river to swim or fish in, some decent rock climbing, great birdwatching, and plenty of nice camping and picknicking spots.
The Delaware Water Gap is easy to get to from anywhere because I-80 runs right through it. So, in theory, you're less likely to get lost getting to the Water Gap from Winnemucca, Nevada than you are from Trenton. Of course, being on one of North America's single largest traffic arteries does have its drawbacks - one of the most scenic parts of the river's gorge feels like it got squeezed onto the shoulder of the freeway. I like to get away from this mess by heading north on the New Jersey side on Old Mine Rd (NJ 606), through the Worthington State Forest. Its a beautiful road along the river where there's good scenery and plenty of bird and wildlife viewing. The best part, though, is that the freeway fades away into oblivion. There are pullouts for swimming and picknicking every so often, and a nice campground in the State Forest.
Along the Old Mine Road are a number of trailheads which have very nice and relaxing hiking. My favorite is the Coppermine Trail, which leads to a beautiful waterfall after about 2 miles. The route can be turned into a 7 mile loop by connecting with the Appalachian Trail. This makes for a nice day and provides a mix of ridgeline walking (good views!), with some up and downs in beautiful forest.
The Delware Water Gap probably isn't the answer to anyone's prayers in terms of a great outdoor destination, but it is a great place to spend a weekend. There's lots to offer the New Jerseyan looking to stretch his or her legs and is a great place for families who are looking to get a break from city/suburban life.
