| lordcasis's Full Review: Apex Digital PD-450 5 in. Portable DVD Player |
I picked this up at Walmart. I bought it primarily because of the price, and because it was APEX. I've always been happy with the amount of features that Apex dvd players offered, and was glad that they made a portable player (so I knew *all* my dvd's would work with it). For a $140.00 venture, I'm pleased with it - and look forward to using it on trips.
The player worked fine right out of the box. The battery life is ok (almost 2 movies before needing a recharge). I haven't messed around with playing MP3's on it, so I'm unsure if MP3 playing has a lesser toll on the battery life.
The unit comes with a car charger - which isn't listed on the box. I did have a problem with the car charger at first (it blew it's fuse), but it's pretty simple to replace the fuse on the car charger. I was also glad that the fuse was easy to replace (would not have been happy if I had to buy a new car adapter).
You can also charge the battery while watching movies (which is a good feature). Of course, you'll get a slower recharge rate.
Also, I called APEX directly, and found that you can get a spare battery from them for $55 dollars. This is pretty cool, since most of the universal ones I found online run for about $99. I wasn't able to find a spare from any vendors, but at least you can call APEX customer service directly to order it.
The screen is 5", and that's the only thing that I wish I would have gotten (a larger screen), but you get what you pay for.
Other things you might be interested in, is that it seemed to do ok with all my dvd media exept dvd +r discs. I threw just about everything else at it, and it worked fine.
The only real beef I have about it is the open button. It's way too easy to open the disk while it's playing (it's along the corner). This normally wouldn't be a big deal, but since there are no fast forward buttons on the unit, you'll have to keep the remote handy if you accidentally open the cd loader (as the unit doesn't seem to remember where it stopped). Also, the open button won't be an issue if you leave it put somewhere - but if you are holding it in your lap or in your hands... be careful.
To sum, if I get rid of this unit it will be because of the screen size. I can live with the eject button, considering the price and functionality of the unit.
