| wish99's Full Review: Apple Power Macintosh G3 (M7104LL/A) Mac Desktop |
The only contact I have with G3's is at my university. Man, I was impressed with my department that I work for, mainly because they were upgrading. I had wanted a G3 of my own, but thought I'd check it out before making a purchase that big.
My overall impression is they could have fixed a lot of the bugs in the G3. I realize they did that with the G4, but it's a shame that the G3 has so many bugs.
The main problem is they crash all the time. Programs quit unexpectedly. I hate that little error window! We're running 8.6 on all of them. There are some programs that just aren't compatible with the batch we got. One program is Internet Explorer. I would rather use Explorer than Netscape, just personal preference. I know of one G3 out of 50 that will run Internet Explorer with freezing the machine.
I also hate that there's no floppy. I mean really, there are still some uses for the floppy! They are so much cheaper than a zip any day. our bookstore sells Mac floppy's for under 50 cents. Actually, I think it's under a quarter. Anyone can afford a floppy, but a zip at our bookstore is usually $12.99! I think that they should at least have had the option of putting one it and creating an extra bay for that option. And if someone didn't want the floppy they could put in an extra zip or CD.
Another thing I dislike is the usual restart key sequence, control-option-start button doesn't work. You've got to press the reset button on the front. Depending on where the base unit is placed, it's sometimes easier to press a key sequence than to reach for the button.
Also, if you want to turn off the extensions on start-up, forget it! Holding down the shift key does nothing (this also doesn't work on the G4). There are times you've got to turn off the extensions to get to the problem, but it won't! It's so frustrating.
I guess the thing I do like is it's fast. If you've got enough memory, about 128, it goes fast. Not as fast as the G4, but definitely faster than previous Macintosh's. We also have some 7100's in our department and they run so slow.
I like the color. It's definitely different. Our labs have matching chairs and tables which is cool. It's different than what we had.
I think Apple did good coming out with the G3 and their products are getting better. It definitely helped them financially.
