| jvideo228's Full Review: Apple iPod 3rd Generation White (15 GB) MP3 Player |
The night I brought my new iPod home, I was full of buyer's guilt. I couldn't believe I spent $400 on a portable music player. When am I ever going to use this?!? What a selfish purchase. A week later, my life has changed...
The iPod has changed the way I listen to music. After installing over 1,500 songs (there's room for about 3,500), finding a song to fit my mood hasn't been a problem. I have taken the iPod jogging, on airplanes, and in my car. Having my library of CDs in my hand has been unbelievable. The 15 & 30GB iPods also include a cradle (a $29 option on the 10GB) with a line-out jack. I have since incorporated my iPod into my home theater system where it sits proudly atop of my entertainment system when not attached to my belt or Powerbook.
Ok, on to the cons. The most obvious is of course, its price. Like all other Apple products, it is expensive for what it offers. I think Steve-O could benefit by knocking off about $100 from each model. However, because it's an Apple, you know it will be very solid and pretty reliable. Besides, I think the "posh" factor would go down if they weren't expensive!
The other problems are the "bugs." If you are running iPod software 1.0, any audio files that contain a glitch in the soundtrack will cause the iPod to skip to the next song. I found that updating the software to version 2.0.1 fixes the problem. Also, the iPod has been known to freeze up after being put in sleep mode or after charging. It doesn't happen very often, but is very irritating when you realized you spent $400 on something the size of a wallet. When it locks up, you can "reboot" the iPod by holding down the "menu" and play/pause" buttons simultaneously. This works with no side effects, but is still a pain.
The third problem is my biggest frustration with the iPod. Once you have loaded music onto it via iTunes, you can't retrieve the files themselves from the iPod. They do not show up on the iPod's icon on the desktop, and you cannot burn CDs from your iPod playlists! Dumb. There are a few freeware solutions out there that allow you to retrieve the files themselves (PodUtil, iPodRip), but why didn't Apple include that? Maybe in iTunes 5?
Overall, the iPod is must for anyone serious about their music. And if you are a Mac user, it's interfacing with iTunes is flawless. However, be prepared for the personality quirks!
