| jwsm's Full Review: Asko W6221 Front Load Washer |
This all began in March 05, when I got fed up of hearing a worsening metal scraping noise inside the machine* on each washing revolution. *Sold as a 6231, 1300 RPM spin in Australia.
The two Asko repair men just left, having done nothing, with hands in pockets like lazy council workers, telling me I should write to Asko Sweden about the problem, or consult the Internet, because they can't alter design specs to fix problem, which 3 visits ago, was the initial repair man's suggestion, having come across the problem before.
The Techs pretty much had an answer for everything, and age had obviously taught them every avoidance tactic.
Turns out... on the 2nd visit when Asko came to replace the springs (under top, and prevents wash unit swaying) - the 2 replacements had V shaped ends (old stock), unlike the curved ends of those in the new machine. These springs lock into small holes in the stainless steel drum and secure it to the frame (front and back). The originals in the new machine purchased in Dec04 showed signs of rubbing due to movement/vibration. This had chafed the stainless steel and galvanising of spring hook causing a metal scraping noise on each wash agitation.
After a week of use, noise was back, and a more disturbing vibration. It seems that if the wash load is full or slightly off balance, any vibration resonates up through stainless steel drum into the springs. It's really a simple fix, an insulation wrap or cowl around the springs would solve the problem, and the machine would run relatively quiet.
The Service Manager wanted the techs to find the vibration problem (i.e., pull machine to pieces), and this became his "big" issue; not the simple insulation fix. There's nothing like adding a complication to cloud the issue.
Next step, demand a replacement if Asko can't get their act together!
As for the machine in general... it washes well without distorting fabrics. Great for 2 people. High temp is good for linen/cotton. I usually add small amount of Oxygen powdered bleach for whites (never chlorine based). Normal wash with additional rinses is my most frequently used cycle, and sometimes Wool cycle. I chose the 6231 with knobs over the electronic for price and because the digital seems overly fussy to operate and very dated in appearance.
I had always wanted an Asko washer and dryer combo, and at $1849.00 for the 6231 Washer and $1699 for the 721 Dryer, the product and service don't live up to the hype.
The initial installation was rushed, with the Asko installer advising the washer did not need to be perfectly level. I was later informed on 1st repair visit this was having an adverse affect and perhaps causing high vibration during spin cycle. On 2nd repair visit I found the dryer had been scratched and dented - Thanks Asko ;-)
