| chrb's Full Review: Canon GL1 Mini DV Camcorder |
Let me start this message by saying that my TV news crew has a couple of GL-1's in their pockets.
This camera passes the test for Broadcast applications. Under the right conditions, the picture quality is simply amazing.
The only "complaint" I have is that this camera offers little to no manual control over the audio.
Also, its 3CCDs are not true Progressive Scan CCDs and are also not true 16:9 wide screen CCS. Using this camera in either Progressive Scan mode (Frame) or 16:9 causes a significant drop in vertical resolution. I once made the mistake of shooting 16:9 in Progressive Scan. The result was that the footage was *Totally* unacceptable for broadcast. Quality was worst than VHS...
Also, its color viewfinder makes manual focusing a pain. (no wonder professional cameras have b/w viewfinders).
Other than that, this camera can match the quality of an expensive $60,000 analog Betacam broadcast camera.
