The Bottom Line: Captain Morgan's Private Stock is a very tasty spiced rum, and one of the few liquors that I can actually drink straight up.

| ladycynic's Full Review: Captain Morgan Rum Private Stock |
I've decided with this review, to compare the Captain Morgan Private Stock Spiced Rum to the Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum. This way, it may help you decide if you'd like to pay that extra six to seven bucks for the Private Stock. Hey...that would be nice now wouldn't it? (smile)
Captain Morgan Private Stock is made in Puerto Rico by the same company as Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum...the Captain Morgan rum co. The Private Stock came out after the Original Spiced Rum, when the company realized the favorable reaction to the vanilla spice flavor. They decided to put a smoother version of their Spiced Rum out, with not only a higher proof...the Private Stock is 80 proof, while the Original Spiced Rum is 70 proof...but also more of the strong vanilla spice flavor that gave their Original Spiced Rum its appeal. The final product...<echo> Captain Morgan Private Stock <echo>...(sorry guys, I'm still workin on that echo effect...I'll get it, don't worry!)
Now, let's compare the two...
The Private stock has a deeper caramel color, it makes the Original Spiced Rum look watered down. The Private Stock seems to have a little more viscosity when swirled in the glass, but not enough to notice unless you're really looking for it. Oh and the price? I pay about twelve bucks for the Original Spiced Rum and about eighteen for the Private Stock.
The Smell: Private Stock...the first scent I get is vanilla...just a hint of the rubbing alcohol smell...but the vanilla overpowers most of that alcohol scent. It reminds me of imitation vanilla flavoring (not the real vanilla extract, the cheap vanilla flavoring you buy when you're short on liquor money...um, okay...this one's just me isn't it?..smile)
Original Spiced Rum...again, the first scent is vanilla then the alcohol, but the smell of alcohol is a bit stronger...or maybe the smell of the vanilla isn't strong enough. Either way, I definitely find the Private Stock more appealing at this point.
The Taste: Private Stock...the first flavor to hit me is the vanilla...mmmmmm...then a slightly sour taste of the alcohol and a slow burn down the back of my throat. The aftertaste is pretty decent actually, mostly vanilla...the alcohol flavor disappeared pretty quickly, and there's a very pleasant heat lingering in my throat...hmm, I believe I've found something I can drink straight up!
Original Spiced Rum...again, the first taste to hit me is the vanilla...then a slight alcohol flavor...ahh, it's the aftertaste that told me in my review of Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum , that this wasn't going to be one I could drink on it's own...the alcohol flavor stays with me in the aftertaste, tastes like vanilla alcohol. Nope, I can't drink this on it's own.
My recommendation: For those of you who drink Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum...Captain Morgan Private Stock is a major upgrade! Get some, put it in your coke, on the rocks, or with that splash of soda...I guarantee you'll find the Private Stock superior to the Original Spiced Rum.
For those of you like me, who really don't like the taste of alcohol...get one of those little airplane bottles at the liquor store like I did (hey, they don't pay me enough here to fork out 18 bucks on somethin' I may not like...(sniff)...I learned my lesson with the 151!), pour it over ice and try little sips...it may surprise you too. The vanilla in the Private Stock covers most of the alcohol taste and...hang on... I came to a realization just now (yeah, it's probably a flashback but...just let me go with it anyway...K?), the slight alcohol taste and burn is a gentle reminder that I am in fact, drinking alcohol and I need to be careful. This is something we don't get when we drink our pansy fruity drinks...right guys? I'd say that's a definite bonus in avoiding that hangover the next day don't you? Heh Heh
Okay, now to the recipe section...I'm giving you four of the lightest recipes I could find. It seems that most of the recipes I have are either, filled with too many other liquors or the mixers are too heavy to allow the taste of the Private Stock to come through. Believe me, you want to be able to taste this stuff...yummy! I strongly suggest, even with these drinks...you use the Original Spiced Rum and save the Private Stock for a great tasting sipping rum.
Citrus Cooler 1oz Spiced rum 1/2oz triple sec Mix with 7-up or Sprite over ice in a tall or stem glass then add a splash of Orange Juice
Jolly Homo 1oz butterscotch schnapps 1oz Spiced rum Mix and strain through ice into a rocks/shooter glass
Golden Shower 1oz Spiced rum 1oz banana liquor Mix with 7-up or Sprite over ice in a tall or stem glass
...And my personal favorite, the only one you can't get in a bar...
Captain Kool 2oz Spiced rum Mix with 6 ounces of (any flavor) Koolaide over ice in a tall or stem...wait a minute...throw it in a plastic cup, I mean c'mon...it's koolaide for petes sake! (trust me, this one will surprise you...Heh Heh)
Thoughts before final thought...anybody wanna buy a slightly used bottle of 151...cheap? Oh and, mattjoe says to tip your bartender or else! Oh, and don't forget he's packin' an arsenal of guns either. (okay Matt, I worked it in...so, you owe me now right? Heh Heh)
...and a very special thank you for my CL bruguru , for adding the Private Stock to our database. My review here is now no longer...off-topic...neener, neener, neener! (grinz)
ATT:Finally...Yes, I have this same review posted under Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum . However, before ya'll start screaming duplicate reviews at me...I accidentally came across something in the site faq with this topic...When submitting content to Epinions whether in the form of reviews, editorials, comments, ratings or your profile page the following are inappropriate:. At the very bottom it says this...Publishing the same review more than once. The only exception to this policy is that if the review compares products, it may be listed on two products.
I have been wanting to have this review under both products since I wrote it, so that anyone looking up either of these would have access to it. So here it is, I'm very pleased to show ya'll my comparison review of these two spiced Rums'.
Final thought...never drink and drive! Remember, there are other people on the road besides you. If you must go out to drink, do what I always do...take a taxi!
