The Dell Axim X50V replaced my Sony Clie UX50. While the UX50 was much smaller in size, the X50V is still small enough to be mobile, with a few occassional size conflicts.
The X50V is a VGA resolution PDA, meaning you have a much more crisp screen, and you can display more on the screen. The screen is bright, easy to read, and very responsive to input. Users should however consider a screen protector on any PDA. Check out PPC Techs Crystal View.
The unit is one of the few that offers both a SD slot and a CF slot. This is very nice since I have a digital camera that use CF. I can share my cards among the two.
The unit has built in wireless and bluetooth. The wireless has great range and is somewhat easy to use after you figure out how Microsoft approaches wireless in PocketPC 2003. Yes - leave it to MS to make things confusing in their attempt to make things easy! Once you get past that, the wireless operates flawlessly. I run WEP and had it setup and connected in about 3 minutes. You can also Synch via wireless...this is one GREAT feature!!!! no more needing to dock...you can synch from the sofa! The unit does come with a cradle however...be aware that many users on axim forums are complaining of the cradle shorting out their USB ports...and the complaints are growing. Make sure you insert it 100% straight and not wiggle it in the cradle. This is one more reason I like wireless synching.
The unit processor is very fast, and even allows you to adjust its speed to help with battery life. It has an auto setting to help manage power as well. The unit runs all of my apps speedily...No one should have speed issues with this quick chipset.
Battery life is average... if you use wireless, it will suck it up quickly. I can typically get 2 days of average use before I have to recharge it. This is under light to moderate use and wireless synch 4 or 5 times a day, and wireless hotspot email checks once or twice along with the typical PDA use throughout the day.
Users buying this unit should also get the RhinoSkin case.. it is metal, very protective..and oh so cool looking. The included slip case from dell just doesnt cut it... drop it and bye bye PDA... the rhinoskin will protect your investment.
The multimedia functions of this unit are spectacular. The VGA resolution makes this unit a real charm when watching video. The cf and sd slots give you many multimedia storage options. The mp3 sound from this unit is top notch...heck, if it was smaller, I'd toss my mp3 player and take this device to the gym!
The unit has a great support community at aximsite.com, and there is tons of freeware for pocketpc2003se.
Those coming from the Palm world will see a slightly slower speed...but you can do so much more with this unit. Do yourself a favor and at least check it out.
Now, what I dont like:
Price...its a little more costly than many PDAs on the market. Dell sales and support...not to sound like a crazy racist...but you never speak to someone that speaks understandable English...Dell outsources EVERYTHING to India. It is very hard to undestand the people you speak with at Dell, and I ened up hanging up twice and calling back just to get someone I could understand!
I needed to soft reset the unit a few times when running non-Dell wireless apps like wififofum, wifigraph, and PocketWinCE.
1/2005 update: I got the Dell Bluetooth GPS accessory. WOW! This one incredible addition to the X50V.... those of you considering the X50, know that the GPS ability of this unit is TOP NOTCH!
