I'm a computer person, and to have a computer in your pocket like the Dell Axim is like having the world at your fingertips. And having a computer with wireless capabilities is even better. And having a computer with true VGA and Microsoft products like Word, Excel and Media Player is even more better (bad english, but you get the jist)!
First of all, many PDAs have a lot of these capabilities, so what makes the Dell Axim 624Mhz better? Well, its more powerful than most, has probably the best resolution if not one of the best, and its compatible with so many software, wireless/bluetooth devices out there.
I recently visited my fraternity at UVA during Oct'05. I pulled out my Dell Axim to check my schedule and one of the brothers saw it and marveled at it -- soon my PDA was being passed from one college student to another...everyone was "Wow!" "Look at that resolution!" "Oh my god, that video looks great!" "Man! I can read the fine print on this thing!"
Can you imagine a bunch of college kids that overly impressed with my little device?! The wow factor from them was truely rewarding in itself -- another testiment to the Axim...these kids are usually at the forefront of technology, and the Axim caught them off guard!
And that's why the Dell Axim is better than all the rest -- you won't get that with the other PDAs...I wasn't the only one with a PDA there. Other alumni pulled theirs out way before I did, and the college kids were like..."oh, neat, you have a PDA..." and with mine they went uniformly ballistic. Ha! I loved the look of jealously on the other guys' faces!
Anyway, the Pocket PC is the Pocket PC, the software you put on the Axim will make or break it for you. The Axim facilitates the software better than other PDAs because of the resolution and processing power.
The Axim has both a SD Card Slot and a CF Card Slot. Very useful for me since both my Canon SD400 uses the SD Card, and my Canon Digital Rebel uses the CF Card. AND you can buy accessories that insert into either card slot..I'm looking to get a GPS unit for mine eventually.
You can use the Pocket PC program to re-program all the buttons, so I've customized mine to my liking.
The big screen on the Axim is what makes it such a great note taking device. I use it in class, at meetings, out and about town to jot down notes, people's numbers, etc. I have the voice recorder on standby in case I don't have time to write something down.
The battery lasts up to 2 - 3 hours...maybe more. It depends on what you're doing on it. When i do something like read an eBook away from a powersource (cause you can keep it plugged in while you're using it), I'll put the Axim in power save mode--this locks the processor at about 200Mhz which uses 1/3 of the power than at 624Mhz. I'll read an eBook for about an hour on the battery and it will display about 80% batter life left afterwards...not bad huh?!
Everyone else has told you about all the other great stuff about this computer...and yes, it is a computer, and its more powerful than my old Pentium II 500Mhz sitting in the corner of my room acting as a server! So, have fun reading all the other reviews! Dell has great customer service, if you don't like the Axim, return it! They'll even pay for shipping back :)
