| laufingboy's Full Review: Diablo 2 for Mac |
Whenever I mention Diablo II at my church, I generally get a bunch of grumbling, thwapping of fingers on my forehead, and a few requests for exorcism.
That's okay, though. Diablo II is a good enough game to withstand the red marks on my forehead and pouring of holy water on me.
At first, what attracted me to the game was its popularity. Then when I began playing it, I was even more attracted to the game for its wonderful graphics and intense gameplay.
Despite what the game title may indicate, you are NOT Diablo wreaking havok on the world. No, instead, you are an adventurer of the Necromancer, Barbarian, Sorceress, Amazon or Paladin who seeks to destroy the world of Diablo and bring peace once again.
Graphically, the game is spectacular. Whether you're testing the elemental magicks of a Sorceress or a Bone Spear of a Necromancer, the graphics look amazing realistic for a 3rd person view. The response of something being equipped is also pretty cool. For instance, if you equip your character with a chest plate, that plate will appear on your character. You get amazed with this for a few minutes, simply equipping and dequipping a character before you finally accept it.
The gameplay is also incredible. The game isn't impossible to beat, yet it's not a pushover either. Also, due to "practice sessions", your character will have to specialize in a single area in order to become effective. If too little time is spent on a skill, it's too weak to do any real damage. Same goes for a spell, as your mastery of the skill is intertwined with the damage that the skill will deal.
Like any online game, however, there's the matter of online personas. Many people simply curse in a game, since there are no moderators. Others use hacking programs to promote their characters quickly. Although there's the option of offline play, it's quickly dull and boring with no interactivity.
So, what's the bottom line? Sure, buy Diablo II. It's a wonderful game with great gameplaying, super graphics, and the oh-so-great CG animation movies in between each Act of the game.
