| mjp29's Full Review: Canon PowerShot S50 Digital Camera |
When I purchased this camera, I made it clear to the salesperson that I wanted a camera that had good macro capabilities. I'm a biology teacher, and I like to take photos of small creatures like insects. The 2 megapixel camera I already used could take a macro picture as close up as a penny or quarter. I found the macro capability on this camera to be unacceptable. Perhaps I was misinformed by the salesperson, but the distance that the camera had to be from the object was unacceptable to me. Most people probably won't use this camera for macro applications, so that is probably not an issue to most.
The photographs that I took, using it as a point and shoot camera, were very very good. I had no complaints about this. If you're looking for a good point and shoot camera and don't want to take macro or telephoto pics, this is a great camera. However, once I started thinking about how much I paid for this camera, considered that it's optical telephoto capability didn't reach out there, it's digital zoom beyond that simply distorted the pixels, and that it didn't have the macro capability I wanted, then I packed it back up in the box and headed back to the store and received a refund the next day.
This camera did not have the ability to add on a macro lens or a telephoto lens, which further helped me decide that other cameras in this price range may be more what I'm looking for. I began considering the Canon Powershot G5 and the Olympus c-5050 zoom. I decided on the Olympus c-5050 zoom and ordered it yesterday - I believe the Olympus is more what I'm looking for and cost less. I'll review it when I get it.
Overall, the Canon powershot s50 is a feature rich 5 megapixel camera that is very good for those that want to use it only for point and shoot shots, but I felt that its close up and telephoto lens capabilities lacked the built in bells and whistles that I was looking for. It can't accept external lenses to bring me where I wanted to be with this camera. That's mainly why I decided that the price of this camera was high enough where I should have bought something else.
