d_chaloupov's Full Review: Grim Fandango for Windows
The Plot: You are Manny Calavera - travel agent in the Land Of the Dead. Land Of The Dead is a place between the world of Living and Heaven or Hell. All people have to cross this dangerous place and the fastest way is "Number Nine" - high speed luxury train, tickets to which can only be given to the best of the best. Manny is desperate, he seems to only get poor clients, while his rival Domino gets all the best candidates to "Number Nine". Manny decides to steal one of Domino's clients, not knowing what he's getting into: somebody is stealing "Number Nine" tickets from unsuspecting people, and selling them to crooks. You'll find new friends, love, and your ticket out of the Land Of The Dead on the journey to get to the roots of this conspiracy.
Gameplay: Your character's movement in Grim Fandango is controlled by keyboard. Save anywhere - unlimited amount of saves feature works great, although there are NO fatal for your character situations in the game i.e.: if you try to drop from a cliff - Manny will correct you, and step back. Also all puzzles are solvable (some require substantial thinking), and all of the speech trees allow you to try all of the choices (sometimes much funnier than the correct one), without getting stuck, if you upset the person you talk to. My only problem was that some of the locales are hard to get into, because entrances sometimes are not obvious, and Manny seems to go past them on the predetermined route, until you correct him at the precise moment.
Gameplay: 4.999 out of 5
Graphics: This is the first adventure game to sport 3D graphics from LucasArts. While the character models are cartoonish, they are very articulate, and loveable. I think that using more realistic ones would've ruined the atmosphere of the game - surreal, but not gruesome. Unlike some of the latest 3D games - all of the dialogs are lip-synched. The locales are pre-rendered in glorious 3D and look absolutely beautiful. The cutscenes, also beautifully rendered, feel like real cliffhangers!
Graphics: 5 out of 5
Sound: The sound in Grim Fandango is above excellent (in fact this should be a trademark of all Lucas Arts games)! Everything sounds exactly as it should, even when your character is underwater. The voiceovers are done by professional actors, and greatly complement the atmosphere of the game. I especially loved the voices of Glottis, Manny and Salvador Limones. Most of the dialogs are absolutely hilarious. The soundtrack of the game is composed of Mexican folk music (mostly guitar), and IMHO could be sold separately - its that good!
Sound: 5 out of 5
Summary: This game is a Must-Have for any Adventure game fan! I enjoyed every minute of this game, and only disappointment I have - it ended too quickly! Thumbs up for Lucas Arts! May the Force always be with them!
