Carazariah's Full Review: Hewlett Packard LaserJet 1012 Printer
Pre-Opening
This is a relatively new purchase for my local church office. The story of how this printer was chosen is an interesting one in itself but off topic for this review. If you want an idea, you may check out my link at the bottom of this story to the review on the Konika 1350W.
Opening
First this is a small footprint laser printer, designed for a small or home office that needs a little less than 5000 prints a month. The printer itself has a nice striking and pleasingly simple appearance that blends right in and makes itself at home wherever its surroundings. I like that about my peripherals, the less attention they draw to themselves, the better the overall feel and look of the office.
Installation
This printer comes equipped with a simple full color quick start guide, beginning toner and of course all the registration cards, manuals and software you need to get going.
Look Out!What you won't find is a USB cable!
I'm not sure when the manufacturers started cutting costs this way but its sure annoying especially when the local specialty retailer attempts to up sell you with a $20 cable.
My Advice on USB
Pick up a Belkin at your local Walmart Super Center or at Fry's Electronics and save $15 bucks or so.
Installation Continued
The printer's detailed instructions make it simple for even a novice to get this printer connected and running in just under 10 minutes. Even if your system is old and slow like our church office Duron 600mhz and Windows 98, this printer just worked. Wow the USB hooked up flawlessly and the printer worked right out of the box.
Simple Printer Sharing
We have a small office so its nice to share out printers. This one worked flawlessly over the network and I was able to set up that additional step in just a few minutes. I know our Pastor appreciates it since the HP Deskjet 810 prints excruciatingly slow in his office.
Print Quality and Speed Notes
I was pleased to see this printer printed exceptionally fast even under large graphically intense documents and banners. It chugged out close to the 15ppm or better for everything that I've thrown at it so far.
Wow the print quality is very good 600x600 is plenty good enough for black and white and the prints are crisp and clear.
Closing
So if youre looking for a Small Home Office Laser, with a small footprint and fantastic cost replacement costs on toner then this is your printer. You can find these for $150 to $200 dollars at your local retailer; this HP is the one for you.
