Pros: The 1400x1024 screen is beautiful, bright, clear, and easy-to-read - AMAZING!
Cons: The screen fades slightly when looking at an angle.
The Bottom Line: The IBM ThinkPad T40 (237392U) is greater than its impressive parts. The details in how IBM puts it all together makes it the best laptop.

| michaeltbowers's Full Review: Lenovo ThinkPad T40 2373 (237392U) PC Notebook |
I absolutely love my new ThinkPad T40 237392U. It is thin, fast, light, powerful, wireless, and stylish.
It has beautiful hi-res 14.1" 1400x1024 screen, 512MB RAM, ATI Mobility RADEON 9000 32MB DDR 4x AGP graphics card, a CD-RW/DVD, 80GB HD, Gigabit Ethernet, 56K modem, and a 1.6GHz Pentium M processor.
Its keyboard is awesome - solid, excellent tactile feedback, great spacing and positioning of the keys. The special Windows keys are missing on the keyboard, but it comes with a utility that lets you map the right Alt and right Ctrl keys to these keys. It also has two extra keys for Internet forward and back.
Don't let the 1.6GHz speed fool you. The Pentium M processor works differently than the Pentium 4. A 1.6Ghz Pentium M is faster than a 2.8GHz Pentium 4. Intel's website explains why.
This model comes with 512MB of memory. It also has an easily accessible memory slot to add more memory - I don't have to worry if I have a free slot - memory expansion is designed in!
This is a highly portable laptop computer that is powerful enough to completely replace my desktop.
I fully recommend this laptop to anyone.
NOTE: It took me a while to figure out IBM's model numbers. The T40 is a line of pre-built laptops with many different configurations and price ranges. They all share the same case and motherboard. The differences are mainly in the hard drive, CPU speed, amount of RAM, and wireless connectivity.
The real model number of my laptop is not T40 it is 237392U. All of the T40 laptops have a model number that begins with 2373. The last three digits distinguish between T40 models. IBM prebuilds these laptops so there are many different models to choose from.
The most important thing to realize is that not every ThinkPad T40 is the same. Before you buy you have to look very carefully at what is installed on the T40.
The 92U (i.e. 237392U) is IBM's second-most high-end model. It is designed for people who need a larger hard drive (80GB), higher screen resolution (1400x1024), more memory (512MB), and the 1.6MHz Pentium M processor. It costs about $2600.
The 96U, 94U, and 91U are almost identical to the 92U. The difference is in wireless networking. They all come with built in Gigabit Ethernet and 56K modem. The 92U and G1U add an IBM 11a/b Wi-Fi wireless. The 94U adds an Intel 802.11b wireless. The 96U adds a Cisco Aironet wireless. The 91U is upgradable to wireless.
The G1U (i.e. 2373G1U) is IBM's most high-end model. It is often called the T40P. All the features are the same as the 92U, but it has a faster (but smaller) 40GB hard drive, and a workstation-class ATI Mobility FireGL 9000 64MB graphics card. It costs about $2800.
There are other less-expensive T40 models like the 82U, 72U, 47U, 85U, 75U, 8DU, 8CU, 8AU, 7CU, 7AU, BDU, 58U, 19U, 16U, 14U, and 12U. These models have a 40GB hard drive, 1.5MHz Pentium M, 14.1" 1024x768 screen, 256MB RAM, and various wireless options.
