| mongo123's Full Review: JVC HR-XVC1U DVD Player / VCR Combo |
In a nutshell, this purchase was a mistake. I originally purchased it to save space by having a VCR/DVD combo unit that could play mp3 files as well.
Although hookup and programming were fairly easy, the device broke within the first week. I have previously owned NEC and Mitsubishi VCR units and never had a problem with reliability, yet this unit on first use failed to record despite correct programming (I later learned that it simply would not record ANY programmed events), and the tape insertion mechanism broke on its 2nd or 3rd usage.
DVD function is good, though- plays MP3 files reliably off of DVD-R and CD-R discs, and image off the DVD is reasonably good. The VCR when put on manual record provides a good picture (not SVHS, but then again it's not supposed to).
Since it broke so quickly, this review is therefore limited. Under no circumstances can this unit nor other JVC products in the A-V category be recommended by this reviewer. Service centers are found to be few and far between in Illinois, so repair will be a pain as well.
