Pros: Great design and implementation. Picture rivaled Samsung HD-931 at a lower cost.
Cons: MP3 implementation. And, the JVC brand, but I ambeing converted into a believer.
The Bottom Line: This product will not disappoint you. I am being converted to a true JVC believer after seeing this machine in action.

| stheri88's Full Review: JVC XV-N50 DVD Player |
I was fortunate enough to receive a Mitsubishi 48313 HDTV for Christmas this year. So, naturally, I couldn't wait to retire my existing, non-progressive scan, Panasonic DVD player in order to replace it with a better choice for my new setup. Unfortunately, I took the long road to come up with the best possible product to meet my needs.
I had actually grown extremely attached to my Panasonic RV-32 player. It had a great picture, good features, solid support of other video formats, and great mp3 support. Sadly, no progressive scan as I stated earlier. So, I was faced with the dilemna of wether it was really worth it to shell out some dough for a new dvd with essentially just one extra feature I wanted. My first choice was the highly touted DVI player on the market, the Samsung HD-391. That player does have a fantastic picture, but after you buy the monster cable, you have a solid $380 to $400 bucks invested. A little too much for my blood. And, MP3 support was lacking. Only the first 15 or so letters of the title displayed. Also, on screen menu was pretty clunky and the remote also.
My next choice was in an effort to get the best bang for the buck with the Sony DLV-300p combo dvd / vcr. This product had subpar DVD picture quality and exhibited an excessive brightness when playing dvd titles. Also, the menu was very limited and when engaged in progressive mode would not be visible when using the unit other (coaxial or composite) outputs. Seems like someone overlooked that when building this machine. And, since I could not disengage progressive scan from the remote, I would have to go and physically leave my couch to turn progressive off on the unit. What happened to "remote" control. Oh well, for $179 you get what you pay for. An ok vcr, and a not so ok dvd player. And MP3 support was limited similar to the Samsung noted above.
At this point I nearly gave up the search, but my desire to enjoy my hdtv to the max compelled me to research one more time and get another player. I happened upon the JVC XV-b50bk. This player is sleek and affordable. It is also really inexpensive at just $99 from Best Buy. ONce I set it up, I realized that the menus were well thought out and provided a host of options for audio and video setup.
Next, how did it perform. Well, I can tell you from experience the picture on this unit in 480p mode on my tv rivals that of the Samsung at 1080i. I can't explain the numbers behind it, but I trust my eyes and my wallet wasn't hurting after the purchase. Also, MP3 support is much better with a long title displayed although I did prefer the Panasonic RV-32 in regards to mp3 title playback menus. But, still this players mp3 overall support was better. Also, sound quality on my titles using the optical output literally blew me away. And, played my VCD's and SVCD's without a blink.
My adventure was somewhat long and frustrating, but I couldn't be happier. Learn from my experience. You won't be disappointed with this player. Trust your eyes not just your wallet!!
