2 surprises (Reply to this comment)
by james_rivers
You hit it on the head:
1. For a rapper who says that he likes to always have the suspense that things could fall apart at any moment, why didn't he freestyle?
2. The song selection left me wondering, especially since I read an interview where Jay said that he won't do "Girls" live.
One other note: What's up with the "bonus" track. He uses it to plug Blueprint 2. That's lame.

He may get the crowd excited but not nearly as well as some true emcees out there. He usually just does his set and messes with the crowd a little. Nothing extra.

Exactly. "Can't knock the Hustle" came out great. Mary nailed the vocals.

i thought he was not that energized at hard knock life...he did a small little something last summer where he was playing clubs and small venues and he was better there..maybe he has stage fright..hehehe..Carletta

I don't know about not being able to rock a crowd. When the Hard Knock Life tour came through a couple of years ago, he did an amazing job....
And as always, I bow to your greatness....great review

Black Thought is my second favorite lyricist of all time.
I agree about the track selection here, I would've loved to hear something other than Big Pimpin' and other radio mainstays, but then again, it IS MTV -- so I'm not surprised. I really did love the rendition of Can't Knock The Hustle, and I liked how he flipped the beat and spliced in some Nas and Mobb Deep on Takeover....D

Yeah, he's not really a good stage performer. Too many rappers don't have the slightest clue how to rock a crowd nowadays.

Too bad... they're pretty live. I know they toured the UK a lot a few years ago, but I think the guys are doing mostly production work in the states now.
However, it's getting about time for them to drop a new LP (maybe in a few months, Black Thought's solo should be dropping sooner) and they'll probably go on tour after that so be sure to catch them when they hit the UK leg of their tour.

Hey... I like that.
I happened to catch part of Jay-Z's Unplugged performance. I quit watching early, after he started into Girls, Girls, Girls. No fire in the belly.
Great review.

I've sadly never seen The Roots in live concert
but that is admittedly near impossible, as hip-hop acts rarely come across the pond.
Oh well, i'll have to make do with the Eminem concerts - being the only rapper to ever set foot over here
Blah must be something to do with the rain...
