| hegrey's Full Review: Sony VAIO GRZ610 PC Notebook |
I have had this notebook for about a month now.I had read mixed reviews about it..so heres what I think about it.
All and all, this is a good value for money.Considering that SONY VAIOS are pretty expensive, this one serves as a perfect desktop replacement/notebook.
Let me start with the pros. The first and the foremost point worth mentioning here is that it is light(6.4 pounds approx).Ive seen some of the dell models and they are way too heavy to carry on with ease. This notebook comes packed with a powerful P4 2 Ghz processor, that suits most of my needs.I am a webdesigner, so I frequently user power applications such as Photoshop and Macromedia Flash/Fireworks and this notebook has no trouble handling it.The RAM is upgradable to 1GB(from 256 MB thats provided).Besides there are also2 spare PCMCIA slots for expansion and one more slot for an extra battery if you want to have more time without the AC adapter.Equipped with a firewire port, and 3 USB ports, this baby suits most of the requirements of modern day hardware systems and leaves enough scope for expansion in the future
On the negative side, the battery life is incorerctly advertised. In fact, with full brightness, a new battery hardly lasts about 1 hr 25 mins which is pretty less for a notebook.Again, the AC adapter is a bit big in size and also heavy.Another point worth noting is the fan.The fan makes a bit of noise(compared to dell systems) but its not that loud to disturb you.The CD RW/DVD combo drive plays DVDs effortlessly but does make a lot of sound(like a spinning motor) while playing CDs.Besides there is no CD burning software provided and you have to use the built in support provided by windows XP(which I dont prefer). You need to install your own copy of Nero as Roxio is incompatible.Another limitation is the display settings which cant go beyond 1024X768 pixels. With a 32 MB ATI 7500C Radeon card, i wished SONY had provided higher resolution support.
Neverthless, this is a great system to own.It comes with a lot of features for the price and the brand name and also has good resale value.I recommend this system to you :)
Hope this review helps all you guys out there
