| rag47's Full Review: Martin 000m Acoustic Guitar |
I've played guitar for about 35 years. My wife plays a little, and I got her this guitar to take with her to guitar camp. She didn't want to spend very much (no commitment!) but I wanted her to get something decent to play, as it's easy to be discouraged by trying to learn on an unplayable guitar.
The 000M is a medium-sized, steel string guitar with a matte finish. This matte finish makes the Martin "M" series about $100 cheaper than the "1" series. I don't like the look of the finish very much, but it's not obnoxious and it doesn't appear to affect the sound of the guitar. The decorations on the guitar are plain.
I put silk-and-steel strings on it for my wife, since her calluses are not developed. She played every day for a week at camp without problems. The guitar would sound better, or louder anyway, with light gauge steel strings. The silk-and-steels don't drive the top as much as they should. The neck is comfortable to play. The guitar is well-made, with no flaws that I could see.
When people come over to my house to jam, they often pick up the 000M and are surprised by how light it is, how easy it is to play, and what a fine sound it has. I think it's quite a bargain for a $600 guitar. It has a solid spruce top and it's made in America by Martin. The neck is 1 5/8 inches wide. If you're into fingerpicking, you might also consider the OMM which has a wider neck. A lot depends on how big your hands and fingers are.
The 000M is a good choice for a "road" guitar. You wouldn't want to risk your $2,000+ "good" guitar where it might get stolen, or smashed by an airplane baggage handler. The 000M is a plain looking guitar, but it plays well, and I like that. We're had this guitar for a couple of years now, and we're happy with it.
UPDATE April 2005: This model had been discontinued by Martin, but may still be available as old stock from a dealer, or as a used guitar.
