spinningjennie's Full Review: Microsoft Pandora's Box for Windows
As if I didn't have enough of a problem with Tetris addiction! Thanks to Alexey Pajitnov, now I've got "Pandora's Box" to keep me from doing things like laundry, web pages, dishes, etc.
I'm not a huge computer game junkie. I can't stand shoot 'em up adventure titles, but that's the majority that the industry seems to cater to. So when I was at the computer store with my boyfriend (who was searching for titles in the aforementioned bloodthirsty genre), I was thrilled when my eyes stumbled on "Pandora's Box."
Travel the world solving puzzles, each a step closer to capturing all seven "tricksters" Pandora let loose when she opened the mythical box. The capture of each trickster requires the location of four pieces, each which requires solving one to ten different puzzles. The trickster can then be captured upon completion of a substantially more difficult/involved "challenge" puzzle. The ten puzzle types vary in difficulty and display photos or objects from the part of the world you're currently playing in. As you play and complete the puzzles, which take anywhere from a couple to fifteen minutes, you earn points which you can use to help solve those which are giving you particular trouble.
This game is a feast for the eyes, ears, and brain. The diverse objects d'art are beautiful in and of themselves, but the background graphics are rich, too. The music also carries the regional theme. Prior to travelling to a new city in search of another piece of the box, a narrator tells the accompanying part of the accompanying trickster's story. To me, she sounds remarkably like the woman from "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego;" considering the globe-trotting nature of the game, I wouldn't doubt it.
I'd recommend this game to all puzzle lovers. Just make sure you get a good head start on your household chores, first :-)
