Three years ago, My brother-in-law got this game for his birthday. We sat down at the computer together and played for an hour...getting virtually nowhere. But, I definitely saw a game that I could potentially enjoy playing for a long period of time. It would challenge my mind and force me to approach each situation with intelligence, applying knowledge to the problems posed by the adventures I engaged in. I asked "Santa"(my parents) to bring me the Playstation version for Christmas. He(they) did.
I woke up fairly early the day after Christmas and ate breakfast, sat down, and played the game for three hours. I was once again completely engulfed by the game. The graphics, the first-person point of view, the puzzles, all of it was great. I was instantly a fan and I was addicted with ease. I did not want to put down the controller.
As long as I felt like I was getting somewhere while I was playing, I was intrigued. No matter how frustrating or challenging it got, if I had an idea that I had not tried before, I was going to continue playing. I suppose that that is one reason many people DO NOT like this game. It's difficulty level can be very high at times and it really brings you to use every weapon your mind has at its disposal. And if you are "unarmed," you will not get to far, and thus, the game loses its attraction. So, for one to enjoy MYST, it takes two things: 1) A logical and intelligent way of attacking problems and 2) A pretty descent attention span, for when things seem to be at a standstill. Luckily, I had these, so I was good to go.
Eventually, I must admit, I did get to the point where I felt stumped. I could not for the life of me think of anything that I could possibly do to change the outcome. I hung up my controller and retired...for the time being...
About three months later, I picked the game up again, to show my cousin a little of it, knowing it was right up his alley. He was also turned on to it, and it drew me back into it. We sat and played, taking turns from where I'd left off, working together, giving each other ideas as to what to do and how to do it. Finally, with each other's help, and a little hint here and there, we managed to tackle al the tasks and defeat the game, discovering a pretty satisfying conclusion to a fantastic video game experience. I still remember the feeling I got when I knew I'd conquered something that I knew took all my playing efforts and attention, and it was an incredible feeling of accomplishment. But of course, that is never enough. I ran out and bought Riven: The Sequel to Myst...I'll let you know how that turns out...
