| endurance's Full Review: Sony CLIE® PEG-T665C Handheld |
I figured I would write up my Clie Review on the Clie, because as of late I have been using it a lot! So here is the run down of how it has gone:
Out of the Box
The box from Sony was packed, it contained all my goodies, I opened up the packages and found my leather case (so-so), Keyboard (running smoothly at the moment), Screen Protector (ONLY 1 for 9.95!), Memory Stick (going to need a new one soon) and the grand daddy of them the Clie.
I tore open all the packages and got right to work, I did one final sync of the Prism to make sure I had a valid on PC backup, then I took and un-installed the Handspring Palm Desktop.
Once the Clie was USB'd in and powered up it took about 10 minutes before I could get a working charge enough to start it up while charging it. I ran through the usual 'config' of time, date, digitizer sync, etc.
Out of the box, setup was a breeze, Sony's disc came jam packed with some great utilities, Documents-to-Go is a GREAT starter app, and I however only installed the Sheets to go, as I love my WordSmith.
All the software installed, I let it charge a bit, so I could sit back in a comfy chair and give this bad boy a run for its money.
The App Test
Hi-Res gives you a lot more screen room, I keep finding myself amazed that I can have 8 icons across the top in YiShow! Its is truly awesome, but not all apps are hi-res enabled, so sadly in most cases they say old fashioned low-res. You can always use Sony's built in Hi-Res helper, but it can slow apps down.
Most of my normal apps (short of some opensource/freeware apps) worked flawlessly. Launcher III, WordSmith, Printboy, to name a few worked without a hitch.
So the apps worked, now onto its features.
Sony Clie Built-in Apps
Sony offers in the T665C model the following goodies:
- Remote Control
- MP3 Player
- Enhanced Address Book (Picture can be inserted)
- MS Import
Just to name a few, the CD offered a few extra Sony Apps like Paint etc. Amazing what a small little handheld can do!
Lets skip the boring stuff and get to the real stuff.
Quirks with the unit...
Battery Life - So far I have seen it drain down pretty quickly, I have learned to turn off the unit or backlight when not really using it full tilt. I have yet to run a stress test and see what kind of life I can achieve on a full charge.
MP3 Player - It is nice, dont get me wrong, it actually displays the title which is 30x better than my Rio could do, but the interface is kind of boring, and not as robust as say Winamp. But hey that is my onion.
gMovie - A app I had on my Prism, its just not as robust as Kinoma has turned out to be, I plan on buying the producer in a few months and begin converting Quicktime Trailers into downloads from HappyPalm. I dont plan on using this much.
Slippery - The unit is polished metal, very slick at the moment, maybe I should get a rubber bumper kit of it ;)
Leather Case - The free leather case is a TIGHT fit, you have to SHOVE it into the case in most cases popping out the memory stick, or pushing buttons in the process.
Leather Flip Cover - This is Sony's replacement to the flip cover on the old Palm units; my Palm IIIe had it, very simple and easy. This however is hard to get off, and hard to put back on.
Good things about it
SPEED! - After using my Prism for a year or so it always seemed like things got slower as I ran out of memory ;) Even with only 2mb left on the clie's primary 16 mb of memory I am still able to do just about anything and no speed loss.
Hi-Res - Definitely one of the high-points. With YiShow (a review to follow soon) I am able to drop in Windows BMP files and easily set my background wallpaper just as I would my Windows wallpaper.
Multimedia - Not just mp3's I have movie trailers filling up my memory stick, as well as mp3 songs from my collection, it is time to get a 128mb Memory stick or a memory stick case and a lot of extra memory ;)
VFS Support - This is now NATIVE for me, where before I was given VFS ability from the MemPlug, now VFS is standard, no extra apps taking up space.
My Overall Rating
Definitely a GREAT upgrade PDA, I have all I need now to be mobile, short of a hard surface for my keyboard, but hey my briefcase is hard I can always use that ;)
For the price, features, and extras I think I got a great deal, that I will be paying off over the next 6 months, so it is time to get business going into high gear and get it online faster, and better for clients. So... Anyone want to buy some hosting? :)
