When my boss called me and told me to give my Palm V to one of my employees and order myself a new one I knew that I wanted a Pocket PC. The question was which one.
Most of the Pocket PC handhelds with the power I wanted were in the $400 to $500 range, which is more than my boss wanted me to spend. After a lot of searching I narrowed it down to 2 choices, the Toshiba e335 and the Dell Axiom X5. I decided to get the Dell and ordered it with a total price of about $300. Then I began hearing horror stories about how long it was going to take to get the Dell and cancelled that order. I went to Office Depot and got the Toshiba. After a $100 rebate it only cost me $249 plus tax.
I will start with the drawbacks first. This PDA only has a SD expansion slot for which there are far fewer expansion options. It also does not yet support serial devices without adapters. Putting a serial port on it and getting connected wirelessly to the internet using my Nextel phone required me to buy 3 different cables and adapters. Granted this solution only cost me $90 which is actually less than adapters that fit in CF slot on most other Pocket PCs, but this is a mess of cables and stuff I would rather not deal with. If you are strictly concerned about having a CF slot get the Dell or the more expensive Toshiba e740.
Another drawback is actually a warning. DO NOT buy a SanDisk SD memory card for any Toshiba PDA. They do not work after about 2 weeks. This issue has been widely reported by many users. There are other companies that sell SD cards for the same price so just avoid the SanDisk brand.
Other than those issues I really like this PDA. I dont know what I ever saw in the old Palm V. I was never a fan of the Palm OS anyway. The Pocket PC operating system is so much more feature rich and multimedia capable. It came with pocket versions of Word, Excel, Outlook and Windows Media Player. The handwriting recognition software for Pocket PC is far more advanced than for Palm OS. I found the Palm version to be almost useless while the Pocket PC version is very good. I can write a whole sentence out then wait a second and the PDA with recognize the whole sentence, with punctuation. I actually got on Epinions and wrote this review with the PDA.
I purchased a 128mb memory card (not SanDisk) and can use the card to store excess files and a couple of hours of good quality MP3s. You can check out the many features of this PDA at www.toshiba.com. It is really not more feature rich than most other Pocket PCs but the price is better. Overall, I am happy and think I got a good deal.
