graffiti 1.0 (Reply to this comment)

I refused to purchase a next generation palm pilot because I used my mothers Graffiti 2.0 and couldn't get my i or my t's to work (CRAP)
But I found this webpage, so I purchased it, should be here shortly.

May this be a help to both of us.

Extremely fragile (Reply to this comment)
by airmandoors
I got one three weeks ago and I love it, but damned if I didn't go to turn it on this morning and the screen was cracked. Palm does NOT cover craked screens, so I will be out of pocket to the tune of $125. The screen is not durable at all, I think what broke it was when it fell off my desk, about four feet, and it didn't even hit the floor, it hit carpet.
Be very careful.

Infrared keyboard. More info needed. (Reply to this comment)
by chris_baehr
If I'm going to get a Tungsten E, I need to know that I can use some kind of keyboard with it. (Otherwise it's useless to me with just the stylus and I'll wait the C model to drop in price.)
You mentioned that Palm makes one, and that some other manufacturer had one but it wasn't very good. I can tell you that Belkin makes an infrared keyboard for Palms.
There is an offer where I live for a Tungsten E model that includes an infrared keyboard from Belkin for $300 Cdn. By itself, that keyboard is $89 Cdn.
I'm strongly considering it, but not if that was the keyboard you referred to in the review about not being a good option.

Universal connector (Reply to this comment)
by wingerr
The way all the PDA manufacturers like to come out with a completely different connector with every model is the primary reason why I don't buy new ones; the need to buy a new set of accessories like keyboard and charging/sync cradles keeps me from upgrading as often as I might otherwise.
I'd like to see some standard USB connector like is currently used on a wide range of devices like my Garmin 2610, Archos Jukebox, G400 digicam, etc. They all use the same connector, and I'm able to interchange cables at will, which is nice.
I don't see why the PDA models all have to have proprietary connectors, since there's really no additional capabilities served by the change.
I was tempted to get this Tungsten E, but the true cost to me, with all the accessories I'd also have to get, served as a deterrent.

I meant that there was no way to keep the screen off while playing back a series of songs (well, I don't like using playlists so that might be one way of doing it... I should try that out sometime)... there is no random mode that the Palm TE will play back songs while you conserve power by having the screen off like on the Sony models.

I don't know if this is what you meant, but the 5-buttons on the lower-center portion of the Tungsten E can control the Play/Pause (Main Button), Skip FW/RV (Right/Left Button), and volume (Up/Down Buttons.
I think it does turn the screen back on. If thats what you meant, that there is no way to control it without the screen turning back on, then you are right. But you don't need to use the screen to control the music.

Re: MP3 Capabilities (Reply to this comment)

I didn't mention them directly but the lack of a hold button or switch like the mid-range and high-end Sony models (allowing for MP3 playback without the main screen being on and therefore allowing for longer battery life) and a lack of a more robust MP3 player for a Palm handheld (I prefered Sony's own MP3 playback programs but they DON'T work with PalmOne's PDAs!) are the major limiting factors for the MP3 playback. Running the battery life of your Palm to near zippo would also not be a good idea.

My gosh, where does he/she get the time to compose such thorough write-ups? - glad he/she does, it's really a very welcome and useful service to prospective buyers.
Thanks
