| rickyrugrat's Full Review: Panasonic Toughbook 50 (CF-50EAKUUDM) PC Notebook |
This laptop rocks. I was very hesitant to purchase something over $2000 that is of simple generic quality. Every computer at office supply stores was noisy or hot or twisted too easily or looked cheep or was to light and so on. The quest started with a broken hinge on a previous laptop. If not for the discomfort of supporting the broken computer screen, I was happy with my P3 550MHz. Now that I have had a taste of Win2000 and a Pentium M 1.4MHz, I like computers very much again. Windows 2000 is great, the operating system reminds me of NT 4.0, but now I can have multimedia support. Panasonic should advertise these more; I absolutely love the built quality of the computer and the fact that it is the same company that makes Technics 1200MKIII DJ turntables. The keyboard has a nice touch feel and is lightly gray in color, great for low light conditions. The mouse pad is fine, just a pad and two buttons, maybe they are tough, I dont know. The keyboard doubles as the volume control and other functions such as hibernate or suspend. I did not expect much from the multimedia aspect of this computer such as dedicated volume controls or JBL speakers. The back of the laptop has every port found on a desktop, even a parallel port. The absolute best part of the computer is the sound of the sitting machine. There is none. One foot away the sound is non-existent. You hear nothing. The Pentium M processor is efficient enough that a cooling fan is not necessary all of the time. I have heard the fan operate once while charging the battery, which was it. The computer stays cool and I hear nothing. Three years Panasonic wants this laptop operating (standard warranty), so plan on overkill on the build making it a pain when you will be dying for new technology in 5 years and this machine keeps ticking. Oh yeah, it does not fit my old laptops case, it is slightly too big, that's the only quarrel; I have to get a new carrying case because I do not want to scratch the magnesium alloy upper armor. Good luck on finding a Toughbook, I recommend it.
