| haseverything's Full Review: Philips 25PS40S 25 inch TV |
I bought this TV at a large retail chain store. I did not impulse buy, I knew what I was looking for and I had a budget. This Phillips #25PS40S 25’’ TV seemed like a perfect match, or so I thought.
The plan was to use this TV in a bedroom or den as a replacement for one that we handed down to a relative. I was not at all familiar with the Phillips brand. I do know that they make some highly rated top end TV’s, but I had no past experience with them. The large 25’’ size, no frills features and reasonable price were right, so I decided to give their product a try.
I was disappointed as soon as I started surfing. The picture quality was horrible, very fuzzy and grainy. I could never get the contrast and color set right so that the picture looked decent. I used all of the available features to try and make it better, with no luck. I figured that I could live with it, seeing how it was not my main TV (Sony) and that I would not be watching it all the time. Over the next couple of days of watching, other quality issues began to appear to me.
When watching a show or channel that had a graphics running horizontally across the screen (either at top or bottom), the whole picture looked crooked. It was like the picture tube, TV screen or TV itself was running downhill. This became very annoying when watching news or sports programs.
This 25’’ TV is far from flat screen and I knew that. I did not expect the images to bulge at the center of the screen and get fuzzy around the edges. It was like looking through a giant peep hole or a fish eye camera lens. The color even dropped off around the edges.
It wasn’t until I made an unrelated visit to my local wholesale club where I saw this same model TV. The price was $40.00 less than what I had paid. The large retail chain would not price match with the wholesale club, so I returned this TV the next day, with a receipt and a smile. I had owned it for a week.
It’s not all bad; this TV looks fabulous, silver gray cabinet, front facing speakers on each side. I liked its uncluttered face. The one set of A/V jacks were mounted on the side. This was listed as a “designer TV” in the owner’s manual.
The audio features were also great, offering treble and bass level controls and stereo capabilities. I watched a movie or two and the stereo sound reproduction was excellent.
The remote was sleek and ergonomic. However, I would have liked the buttons and the remote itself to have been slightly larger.
The on screen menu at first was a bit confusing, but with frequent trips to the small but thorough manual, it did become easier to use. Menu items were often hard to see due to the size and colors of the font. This would happen when the menu was opened and viewed on top of a TV show that was playing in the back ground.
I had no problems setting this TV up to receive cable, it was a breeze. I was up and running in less that 10 minutes.
This TV also had the “V” chip. A feature I did not need, want or care to use.
I know that this is only a $260.00 / $220.00 TV, maybe I was expecting more. I am glad I did not “settle” and live with it. Still shopping.....
