I had the same problems with my DVD 850 that "markh30" had. But it got worse with a DVD I just purchase. After putting the DVD into the tray and it slides in, it begins to load...AND THEN LOCKS UP. None of the controls worked. I had to physically, unplug the unit, plug it back in, and hit the eject button before it completely powered up. After a waiting a long time for a response to my e-mail, I was informed that it needed a "firmware upgrade." I checked with my local dealer and they quoted me $140 for the upgrade, and the Customer service center (I would have to send it in and pay $10 for postage back) quoted me $125. That is almost halfway to a new DVD player! And since this is off warrentee, I would have to pay full price.

I intend on avoiding Philips-Magnavox from now on...
