| adam728's Full Review: Pioneer GM-X922 Car Amp |
My friend just picked up one of these, and let me tell you, it looks sweat. Very clean and sturdy looking. Performs just as good. He has it running two 8 ohm 12 inch JL Audio W-0's. It's bridged, running 300 watts RMS, and it pounds. The sound is very clean, also. I was really surprised at this thing, it's sitting in the trunk of a 79 Caddy, a very big car. But it pushes hard enough to blur you vision, and I can't imagine what it would do in a small car like a Probe. I also heard this amp in a Cougar running two 10's, and it sounded very clean and loud.
This amp sounds very clean, no unwanted distortion like that from cheaper brands like Pyramid, Boss, Audiovox, Profile etc. It works great for subs, and if you wanted a really high-end system you could use it to run some high-powered component speakers.
This amp is pretty durable. I have seen them running 2 ohm mono (which is NOT recommended) and they actually do not overheat. The built in fan does it's job. Power doesn't increase much going to 2 ohm, because the rails inside the amp are not able to supply the voltage to double power at 1/2 the ohms (which is what should occur in theory). This can be seen by the fact that the amp only gains 50% power going from 4 ohm stereo to 2 ohm stereo. Simply not built to belt out massive power. But it will do as rated, and maybe a little more.
These amps are great on components and on lower model subs. If you are trying to run a Stroker or Treo, look else where, this amp is not up to the task. In fact, almost no amp is, as most competitiors run and amp per coil on those subs, some feeding them more than 4000 rms for competitions. Anyway, if you find a good deal on one of these and it fits your need, go for it. There are other amps out there that are a better value for the watts, but that doen't lower the quality of this amp any.
