Samsung have been steadily releasing players in their Yepp line. Trying to develop the Yepp branding like the way Sony used the Walkman brand. The latest players are the Yepp E32 and E64 with 32 and 64 megabytes of memory respectively. As well as MP3 playback they feature audio recording via an internal mic and a phone book feature to store upto 350 phone numbers. Made possible because of the good LCD display. Extra memory can be added in the form of 3.3v Smartmedia cards. Running off 2 triple AAA alkaline batteries the player can run for 10 hours. It connects via parallel port to the PC, using Samsung's own Yepp explorer and Real Networks RealJukebox software for ripping. The manual talks of an optional USB adaptor, but these have yet to be seen in general availability.
The players come in a very stylish aluminium finish, not as tacky as some other players out, and appears to have good solid construction. It weighs in at 75g without batteries and measures 65 x 87 x 17.2mm. Sound quality is good with a variety of preset EQs, but you may want to bin the original headphones which aren't really upto the job.
Overall this is one of the better players currently on the market, the only main down points being the apparent lack of availability of the USB adaptor and the need to get some additional headphones. It would have been nice to have a rechargable battery and flash upgradeability too. On the plus side this is a small, very sleek player that works well. Unlike some of the more garish looking offerings out there
