| jonaizen's Full Review: NEC SuperScript 870 Laser Printer |
I have been very satisified with my SuperScript 870. It suits my needs perfectly, takes up little space, makes good use of toner, can hold many pages in the tray, and has a fabulous print driver. For most home users and college students it is an ideal purchase.
The SuperScript prints very nicely and quite quickly. Letters are very well defined (rounded, separated) and graphics print nicely as well. Envelope loading and printing is smooth and easy, something which many laser printers have trouble with. It has a reasonable size footprint (ie: does not take up too much space on a desk) and is suitable for most homes, offices, and college dorm rooms.
My favorite part of this printer is its fantastic printer driver for Windows95/98/me (sorry Win2K users, but in the mean time NEC hasn't released a comparable driver, although one is out there minus many nice features). The driver feature the ability to print up to 16 pages on one side of a page. This is wonderful for printing very long documents where the text or graphic on each page is large (for instance PowerPoint presentations, slideshows, and lecture notes). Another fantastic feature is the ability to print doubled-sided. The printer first prints all the odd-numbered pages, and then pauses for you to reinsert the paper for printing the even pages on the opposite sides. Very simple and extremely useful for saving paper and creating booklets. I cannot stress the convenience and joy of this print driver enough - some printers cannot do this at all and others require that expensive third party software be installed (such as Adobe ImageReady). I have experienced no printer jams that were not my own fault (inserting paper too late or removing it in the middle of a job). I have had no physical problems with parts. Changing toner and loading paper is extremely easy.
Despite these wonderful features, the SuperScript does have its flaws. As many users note: paper is some times fed in crooked, causing printed text and graphics to be slanted on the page. This is annoying, but can be easily resolved by making sure the paper holders (in the tray) are firm against the sides of the paper stack. Futhermore, every laser printer I have owned (HP LaserJet IIIp, HP LaserJet 4000, and so on) have had similar problems, all resolved by correctly alligning the pages in the tray prior to printing. Another annoyance, one that is hard to resolve but happens very rarely, is that occasionally a page will come out of the printer with a crease/crinkle in it. I would say this happens one time out of 150, so it is not too bad. The final annoyance is that every so often, when printing long jobs with many graphics or dark images, the toner seems to be spread to the rest of the sheet, making it look unattractive. Again, this happens rarely, probably has a resolution that I just have not found, and almost never occurs when printing text. As other users have mentioned, the fan is a little loud while printing. This is true and if you demand a very quiet environment while printing (for instance if you work in a library) you might look for a printer with a quieter fan. Take note that the printer is virtually silent when idle.
For the price and reliability, this printer is fantastic. I have not had a single physical problem with the printer and it continues to function well day-in and day-out. A superb product that I rely heavily on and would recommend without hesitation.
