| mercury55's Full Review: RCA RCD101 Personal CD Player |
I recently purchased the RCA RCD101 portable CD and tape player. It was an in-a-pinch replacement for a 3 CD changer w/ detachable speakers that I unfortunately dropped while moving, so I was looking for three things in the CD player: portability, inexpensiveness, and a tape deck.
I found all of these elements in the RCA RCD101 and brought it home, excited to put a CD in it and see whether I had made the right decision. Indeed, I had. I was afraid of buying smaller, boom box type stereos because one I owned previously tended to distort and skip when the volume was up any louder than a whisper, but the RCA dispelled my fears of this. The sound was clear and functional. Due to the small size of the speakers, the volume did not run as loud as my previous stereo, nor was it as sharp, but at half the price, it's not much to complain about and, unless you're planning to throw parties that involve concert-quality sound from your audio system, it certainly shouldn't deter you from buying the RCD101.
I'm going to say a few things that may go without saying, but if you're a beginner to the whole buying-a-CD-player thing, it might be helpful. The RCD101 is extremely easy to use. All buttons are clearly labelled. If you want to record from CD to tape, it's simple, and the playback on the tape will be of good quality. Another helpful fact: the RCD101 plays CD-Rs just like any other CD. I've run into problems with a few other stereos on that issue, so that's a real pro.
As kind of a lazy girl, I feel compelled to inform you that there's no remote included, which is a shame when you're listening to music in bed and don't want to get up to turn it off. I doubt, however, that there are too many CD players with remotes in this size/price range.
In conclusion, if you're just looking for a little CD/tape player to put in your room- I'm a college student, and it's great for transporting, and definitely serves its purpose in my room- and aren't looking to invest in a full audio system, the RCA RCD101 is a good choice. It's probably not all that remarkable, but it's reliable, and I would definitely recommend it.
