ericwcha's Full Review: Red Dead Revolver for PlayStation 2
I will separate this review into 6 categories: Story, Gameplay, Difficulty, Visuals, Audio, and Replay Value. You may want to skip the story section for possible spoilers but I will try to keep the spoilers to a minimum.
Story: You play as the character Red (other characters will be playable later in the game). In the opening, your loving father gets killed and the main character Red, ends up being a bounty hunter. Throughout most of the game, Red just roams around and collects bounty on criminals; not really a very deep plotline.
Gameplay: This is probably hit or miss for most people. This game is a third person shooter (similar to SOCOM, Halo, etc). The left analog stick controls the character while the right analog stick rotates the camera angle. The camera angle can be a bit annoying at times but it's all together not that bad. In addition to just shooting people, the character that you are controlling has the ability to jump, punch, crouch, change weapons and dead eye. I am assuming everyone knows what jump, punch, crouch means, so I will just elaborate a little more on the changing weapons and dead eye effects. You are given around 3 types of weapons to start each round: a long range weapon (ie shotgun, rifle), a hand gun (revolver, six shooter), and a throwing weapon (dynamite, knives.) You can rotate through the weapons by pressing one of the D-pad buttons and through the R2 key. As for dead eye, this is a special ability that is different depending on which character you decide to pick. For the main character, you slow down time and pick areas on the body of your opponent that you want to shoot. Other dead eye abilities are: explosive shot gun shells, fire bullets, and poison arrows. You have dead eye "bars" which is basically a power bar that will fill up as time progresses.
Another feature of the game is the dueling. In this part, its a showdown between the main character and a boss-like opponent. In order to duel, the right analog stick is used but pressing down, then up in one quick motion. After this is done, R1 is pressed to show where you want to shoot your opponent. It is quite similar to the deadeye ability for Red and in my opinion does not add much to the game.
Difficulty: For me, this game was quite easy and thus should only be a rental. I blazed through most of the levels quite quickly and did not have much difficulty with any of them.
Visuals: The graphics for this game are rather weak in my opinion. It is blocky and there is nothing to oooo or ahhh at. Even the cinematic scenes are pretty weak. The only thing that may be visually appealing is the scenes right before the dueling. The screen goes into widescreen format and looks like a old movie.
Audio: I really enjoyed the audio. Although the voice acting was nothing special, it had all your typical spaghetti western type music.
Replay Value and Extra Info: There are many things to unlock. Weapons, extra characters for the showdown feature, and extra stages for the showdown feature. The showdown feature is actually quite fun. It is a deathmatch type of setting where you fight against one or 3 other characters based on either time, kills, or money earned. Money and power-ups are gained by picking up cards (dropped when a player is killed) and trying to form poker hands (either stud or hold 'em.)
