Pros: Fully programmable, can control up to 12 devices, programable 'hard' buttons.
Cons: Form factor, should have hard buttons to select the device to be controlled.
The Bottom Line: Can control everything in your living room, lots of programmability, and the form factor is better than it might first appear!

| atlascott's Full Review: Sony RM-VL1000 LCD Remote Control |
I needed a replacement universal remote because my 'best form factor for a uni remote ever' Pioneer universal remote that came with my amp was getting old and flaky, and couldn't control newer components (namely DVD players). I tried the uber cheap route--Phillips Universal remote from the local drug store--and relaized that it doesn't control anything and it would be easier to change the channels by hand than to use a POC remote. I literally threw it away. Truly, you get what you pay for in a universal remote. Buy a $20 uni remote, and what you get isn't even worth what you paid. But those 2 and 3 hundred dollar remotes are SO expensive...why should I pay MORE for a remote than I did for my Progressive Scan DVD player?
Enter Sony. This Sony remote is a good value. I got mine off eBaY for $35. You might find a similar deal, or pay retail: you'll probably get one for about $50 or 60.
I have had the remote for 2 weeks. Entering a code for a new device is a snap. Programming through the learning function is a pain until you get the hang of it (but you only do this once per device); using it is a pain until you get the hang of it. Both of these things take a very short time, and afterwards, you really can begin to appreciate this device's strong suit. It really controls alot of diverse devices really well, and the layout is actually very good once you get used to it. Let's face it: you have to get used to any new remote. And it isn't nearly as difficult to operate as many would have you believe.
Bottom line: great remote, great value, good choice.
