| robb966's Full Review: Sony RM-VL1000 LCD Remote Control |
Oh, but this remote was the answer to my dreams! But only for about six months.
First, the good: this is a wonderfully functional remote that looks great; the "chrome" look around the main joystick and up around the LCD display are a treat to the eyes.
I was able to set the remote up quickly to control my eclectic collection of mis-matched audio and video components. There are codes for just about everything, and, since it is a true "learning" remote, you can teach the thing any oddball commands your components might have (for example, switching between discs on a 2-DVD changer isn't a common need, but one this thing was able to handle learning). Macros are long, and easy to program.
And it feels great in the hand; I'm not a fan of the huge, clunky remote that takes both hands to operate. This one sits nicely and doesn't require a lot of contortions to reach all the buttons... from that prerequisite prone on the couch position!
But now, the bad part....
After a few weeks, I noticed the printing begin to wear off. No big deal, thought I -- a fair trade-off for such a dandy remote!
So I watched as first the two buttons on the bottom (the identically placed "mute" and "recall" buttons) lost their label. No big deal, again thought I -- I just told my wife to remember the one on the left is the mute button.
Similar patterns of denial followed as the weeks dragged on and the (again) similarly placed buttons of "menu" and "guide" ("Menu's on the left, honey!") wore away, as did "volume" and "channel" ("Channel's on the right, sweetheart!").
All things to endure for the high functionality. But then, that left too.
First the recall button (wherever it was) gave out. Then the TV/Video button. Then the Menu button. Oh, I jiggled. Oh, I replaced batteries. Oh, I even tried the time-honored blow-the-breath-of-desperation-into-it method.
Nope. The buttons were deader than doornails.
So here's the summation: worked like a dream for half a year, then absolutely pooped out on me. If you plan on buying another remote in six months, this is the one for you. Otherwise, for the money, there are better deals out there.
