dkozin's Full Review: Rockford Fosgate Punch® P162S Car Component S...
I have considered Rockford Fosgate P162S component system for my Infiniti G35 (as a replacement for my stock front speakers) and auditioned it along with some others. Based on my listening tests, I decided not to get it.
The Current System
The stock speakers I have in my G35 sound fuzzy, lack bass and midrange as well as upper treble. I am happy that I havent gotten the Bose sound system (a $900 option), which sound even worse with over-accentuated upper bass and lower treble. In any case, the aftermarket speakers will improve the situation.
The RF Punch System
The P162S is a component speaker system that consists of two 6.5-inch mica-injected polypropylene woofers, four .75-inch aluminum dome tweeters and two separate crossovers. You can mount tweeters separately or in coaxial configuration on top of the woofers and you can use one or two tweeters per woofer.
The woofers have cheesy metal rings on them, which, I am sure, do not help sound in the way they are supposed to help the woofers to look cool. They also have the shiny word Punch on them (the speaker belong to the Rockford Fosgates Punch line).
Some Specs
The speakers are rated to have frequency response of 70 Hz-22 kHz with a crossover having a -12 db slope. The power handling (RMS) is 60 W and 120 W of peak power. The mounting depth (bottom) is 2.6 inches.
Sound
I listened to these speakers in a one tweeter per woofer configuration (since my car has only one location for tweeters per woofer). The speakers seemed to produce decent amounts of mid-bass and treble, however both the upper treble and midrange were lacking. These speakers would definitely benefit from equalizer (and possibly the use of both tweeters, not just one).
These speakers seem to prefer rap and, to some degree, rock. I did not appreciate the cheesy metal ring (riveted to the woofer cone). It cannot be good for sound and the sample I listened to also rattled at times (even at lower volumes).
Since I only have one tweeter location per woofer and have no equalizer to tame the nonlinear frequency response of these speakers (at least in one tweeter per woofer configuration), I will look for something else to replace the mediocre factory speakers in my G35. But I have to mention that even some coaxial Pioneer speakers seemed to sound better (Pioneer TS-A1680R).
Bottom Line
If you listen to rap a lot, these speakers may be good for you (with an extra subwoofer). But I am going to get something else.
Stunning good looks are only the beginning with the T162S component set. Superior sound quality, power handling and installation flexibility round out...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
