mbaumohl's Full Review: Sebo X4 Bagged Upright Vacuum
I can't believe I'm actually writing a review on something, but the Sebo X4 inspired me THAT MUCH! Normally I don't get excited about vacuum cleaners, but after 2 months of scouring the internet and area stores for the "perfect vacuum", I needed to share the knowledge.
We have a 2-story house with low-pile carpet and travertine tile, as well as 2 BIG dogs and one overweight cat. Our 5-year old Oreck XL was reliable and easy to use (only 8 pounds!) but recently my wife pointed out its inadequacies: it really didn't clean all that well--especially on the hard flooring (and it was pretty loud). Shopping to replace an Oreck, however, is no easy task! Everything else is much heavier/harder work to use, and most uprights don't fit under or between furniture like the Oreck. (We considered a canister, but I hate dragging that little guy around and banging him into doorways and furniture, as well as having to change the various attachments as I went!)
So, here we were looking for an upright vacuum that works GREAT, is relatively lightweight and easy to use, fits underneath furniture without having to resort to the attachments all the time, is pretty quiet, and has a hepa-type filter for a dust-free house. NOT EASY!!
We didn't waste too much time on the "cheaper" variety vacuums such as hoover, eureka, dirt devil, etc. because we wanted to move up in quality, performance, and handling from what we already had. The Dyson made our short list, but it was very heavy, and the base was too tall to fit easily under furniture so you have to frequently change to using the various attachments. The new Oreck XL21 also looked like a winner since it has more power than the XL and is still only 8 pounds, but my wife found it difficult to pull back each time since it had such an inherent forward thrust. The Riccar and Simplicity were very nice vacuums, but a little on the heavy side and it felt like work pushing them around. Finally we found the Sebo X4. WOW!
If you've ever driven a BMW, you know what I mean when I say it just feels like it's put together WELL! Putting it together right out of the box it felt like a solid piece of equipment, even though it's made mostly of a lightweight plastic. It has an extension tube with attachments on it for hard to reach places, but unlike many other vacuums you won't have to use them as much because it is so user-friendly. It is streamline enough to fit underneath and between furniture, glides almost effortlessly across any flooring in any direction, and adjusts AUTOMATICALLY everytime you move to a different type of carpet or flooring. It's truly a pleasure to use! Oh, and did I mention the power? This is the cleanest our house has EVER been.
As a side note, I highly recommend a bag-type vacuum over a bagless one unless you always plan to empty the compartment of your bagless outside while wearing a mask and proceeding to hose it down inside and out before bringing it back in the house! Those bagless vacuums all make a dusty MESS back into the air regardless of what any manufacturers tell you.
I had never heard of Sebo before, but I'm glad I found the X4--glad enough to write my first review! I hope more people find out about these things because something this good should not be a secret!
