Pros: Visual appeal.
Cons: Quality of DVD player & tape recording.
The Bottom Line: DVD player is horrible--Can't handle rented DVDs, only 100% scratchless ones. VCR makes fuzzy recordings.

| lojack_ii's Full Review: Sharp DV-NC70U DVD Player / VCR Combo |
Read this review and I'll tell you every reason why you should run screaming from this DVD/VCR Rip-off combo. I'll start by discussing each unit as individuals.
DVD PLAYER (D)
This is as about as low-end as you can get with a DVD Player. You get a good choice of output capabilities including Component, S-Video, and Composite for the video and RCA or Coaxial or the audio. Personally I prefer an Optical connection for my digital audio (to my receiver) but the difference is usually unnoticeable. The picture quality is fine. Nothing to blow you away but nothing to make you cringe either. The only fault I noticed was a little bit of colour bleed at the edges of the screen when the video was played in widescreen. Sound is also average to good with no real standout problems just nothing to cheer about.
Where this DVD player falls way below the average line into garbage is its ability to play previously viewed DVDs. Everybody knows that you aren't going to get a perfect disk at the local video store unless you were the first to rent the movie--people can be careless. This DVD player however, cannot handle a disk that strays from near perfect. It'll skip, chop the image, or even stop the movie all-together. To test it, I took a movie that wasn't working and brought it home to try on my DVD player which is a Panasonic RV model (highly recommended) and it played right through the problem areas from the Sharp player. Even a Playstation 2 DVD player is more versatile in its abilities.
VCR (B-)
Plays a good picture. The problem is the recordings which may produce a grainy video. Some VCRs have the problem of being too loud when in action but this one is average there and not bad. Overall, this VCR part of the machine is tolerable but on its own its entry-level at best.
REMOTE (B-)
The layout is sort of all-over the place. I found myself looking around every time I wanted to do something, especially switching from VCR to DVD which wasn't nearly as easy as it should be for a combo unit. It's sturdy and looks nice but it is also bulky, which some people may be turned off by.
CONCLUSION
Don't buy this product. You will regret it and you will be mad at yourself later. My advice for anyone on a budget would be to take the money and add a little bit more to get two quality entry-level models on their own. This is a gimmick plain and simple. It seems great because it's cheap but all you're getting is two low-end products wrapped in a fancy package. By purchasing this you will be overpaying for both components.
