Pros: Easy to read LCD, battery life, size, auto settings, video quality in and outdoors, price
Cons: nothing worth noting
The Bottom Line: Very satisfied with the results of both audio and video. The test was showing the movies to my grandchildren. They loved every minute.

| gwm247's Full Review: Sharp Viewcam VL-Z5U Mini DV Camcorder |
So many Mini DV's out there priced in the $1000.00 plus range with conflicting reviews forced me to take a chance on this sub $500.00 offer from Sharp to capture the grand kids on our recent beach vacation. I was a little worried about quality of video this "cheapy" would render. After two weeks of use and filling several DV tapes with beach scenes and laughter, I was pleasantly surprised. The video was excellent as well as the audio that accompanied. True the outdoor scenes were superior to indoor, but isn't that what we've grown to expect with real life video. Meaning without pro lighting or ideal conditions. The auto settings were so good that I never bothered to read the manual. My kind of device!! Not one to edit the movies so I can't comment. Only to say you'll need a firewire card and a 4-6 pin cable to transfer video to your PC. Neither supplied. The stills are poor but usable if viewed on your pc or emailed to friends. USB transfer of stills from the supplied sd card is easy. Don't bother to upgrade the card in my opinion. Best to pick up a digicam for pics. Can't say enough about size and weight. Only need to lug a digital 8 around for a day to appreciate the advantage this little Sharp offers. Comfortable taking it to dinner and catching the kids at their worst.
