| jckatz's Full Review: Holmes Products HASF2120RC Stand (Pedestal) Fan |
I went home for lunch and found that my apartment was a lovely 89.3 Degrees. This is after my landlord "fixed my air conditioner. I have once again called them. After work I decided to go shopping.
After way too much shopping (I like stores with AC and I hate not to purchase stuff). And I was looking for something similar to the
Sharper Image Personal Cooling System 2.0 Sadly it seems only Sharper image carries it, and well I don't live in a town cool enough to have a Sharper Image. On the plus side I now have a Deluxe Yoga Lit I will probably never use, two new books, and saw Herby: Fully loaded.
Since I have now seen every single movie in the theatres worth seeing, and some not worth seeing, I needed to find a way to make my apartment livable. So after the movie, I went a fan shopping. My only criteria was BIG. My first choice was an industrial fan made of solid steal
capable of slicing a small child in half. Since I was unable to find one, I settled for the 20" Aerodynamic Oscillating Power Stand Fan.
The reason for my final decision? Simple the box said, 80% more air flow.
80% more air flow
I admit it, I have no idea what this means?
Does it mean 80% more than other 20" fan. Does it mean 80% more than the 6 inch fan that sits on your desk at work? Does it mean 80% more than the last 20" Holmes fan. I don't know and I don't care. IT says 80% and gosh darn it, my apartment is HOT and I want more air flow.
The legs
Some assembly required but it was easy. The legs snap into place no screws needed. Since the thing is 20" the legs are much larger than any fan I've owned before. But my room is big (that might be why my A/C doesn't do such a good job). I've even added a curtain to section
off a room, and that helped a lot last year, but I think its hopeless unless
Sorry Off Topic. (Must be the heat)
The fan blades
This baby is LOUD. I noticed most plastic fans haves big blades that look like four leaf clovers in shape. This one has blades that look like they will kill you if they have the chance. The box calls it Aerodynamic blade design.
I don't know if this is better or not, but it looks killer so I got it. If you look at the Epinions.com photo you will see what I mean.
Are these blades louder than the other type, I can't tell you, I've never owned a 20" fan before.
Garbage in Garbage out
An old saying in the world of programmers if program a crappy system, then your results will also be crappy. In the word of fans, if you put hot air into a fan, its going to blow hot air out. The good news is I am now blowing 80% more hot air than I would have been if I got another fan.
Tilt
The unit allows you to adjust height, and angle of the head mount, but it doesn't have any down tilt at all. You can only point it up.
Since this unit can be very tall, I was hoping to have a little down tilt so I could blow air on my sleeping body. Instead I have it at my level blowing directly on me, it works OK but it is not my first choice.
Final thoughts
Since I couldn't get my hands on the fan of death they have in warehouses this unit is pretty close. The blades while being made out of sissy plastic and not solid metal, the unit sure can blow. While the unit is loud, it is not so loud as to make listening to TV or radio impossible. And as much as I would love my apartment to be a comfortable 67 degrees, I doubt that will ever happen so even if I get
a new A/C this fan will still help move air around the apartment, maybe just on a lower setting.
Other speeds
I am fairly certain this unit has a speed control, but I have not had the opportunity to change it, heck I doubt, I'll ever even turn this unit off.
This review was written the day after I purchased the fan... Also the day Herbie Fully loaded came out. I e-mailed it to myself and waited until I used the fan before I submitted it.
The good news is yes, it does have a low and medium setting, both loud but not as loud as high, and I got a brand new A/C that can and does get my apartment to a comfortable 67. Currently I have it set at 72, and with the fan moving air around, I am a happy camper.
This is not my first fan review, a long time ago I wrote about a little fan that is still keeping my office cool.
