The Bottom Line: Its great but a little expensive. I recommend it for people who want none of the cheap stuff or people who have high end sound equipment with optical in.
nicholaschin's Full Review: Sony Walkman® D-EJ100 Personal CD Player
This discman is quite slim. Its about the size of a CD only slightly bigger and oval shaped. Although quite small compared to other 'discmen' or discmans its hard to hold and you will need somthing like cargo pants to bring it around. I can't tell you the exact size because someone threw away the manual!
Another thing I have noticed is that it's batteries last a very long time. It only takes about 1-2 hours to charge and lasts near to 115 hours. Its great for going for long vacations where you have to sit in a plane, bus or taxi for a long time with nowhere to recharge. It uses 2 metal hydride 'chewing gum' batteries each 1.2 volts and 1200 mAh. If that isn't enough power there is also an extra battery extension for 2 AA batteries(included). For charging, there is a stand and a 2-pin adaptor which supplies 4.5 volts.
The discman has 5 buttons on the side for the most basic functions like play, FF, FRW,stop and volume. On the bottom there is one button where you slide it to put it into hold mode(hold mode disables the buttons on the side so you wont accidentaly press the control buttons). The remote is used for more functions like pause, bass, replay, playmode and display. The discman can add a lot of bass without distorting the music. The bass 1 function adds a little bass and the bass 2 function adds a lot of bass. The remote has these extra functions as well as the basic functions on the discman. It also has its own seperate hold button which only affects the remote and not the discman buttons and vice versa. I have opened the remote up and i have found it doesn't use LED's for backlighting but something else. It is held closed with only 1 tiny screw and can be opened by gently sliding your fingernail where it is pieced together. There are quite a few small loose parts though. I ADVISE AGAINST OPENING IT UP BECAUSE DOING SO VOIDS THE WARRANTY and it costs about half the price of the discman to replace( thats what the guy at the store said...). And just in case you are wondering I didn't break anything(luckly).
Inside the discman when you open the door there are 2 buttons and the place for the 'chewing gum' batteries. the 2 buttons are G-protecton and AVLS. The G-protection has 2 settigns which are 1 and 2. Set on 1 it buffers about 8-12 seconds of music and set on 2 it buffers close to 40 seconds of music. And of course AVLS (we all know what it does) limits the volume so you won't go deaf if you turn ot too high. I find the placement of the 2 buttons annoying because i have to stop the CD, open the door and remove the CD to access those 2 buttons.
On the outside next to the before mentioned 5 buttons there is a place to plug in the remote(obviously) and a digital out port. The digital out port has fibre optic output and 3.5mm stereo digital output in case you want to connect it to an equalizer, amplifier etc. The usefullness of the fibre optic output varies from location. This is because i have found that a whole lot of sound equipment in Malaysia doesn't even have fibre optic input. Only a few high end equalizers which very few Malaysians can afford or even know about have it. I ahve found that most of the stores in Malaysia haven't even heard of fibre optic. Only RCA, 3.5 and 5mm stereo plugs. The digital out port is shared with the optical port. I don't see why the 3.5 mm stereo port is called digital because it is analog (isn't it). It could however be refering to the optical out which is digital.
Oh yeah... I just remembered it is made in Malaysia so it is cheapest here. It isn't cheap stuff like the made in china stuff and can stand a lot of wear and tear and won't just suddenly die.
In my oppinion this discman is a bit pricey because it has much less features than the way cheaper ones like AM/FM radio etc. However, it has excellent g-protecton, a CD text remote, digital and optical output which the cheaper ones don't have. It is also very easy to use. I found that i knew how to operate it the moment i saw it even without looking at the manual(up till now i havent even seen the manual but i know how to use it perfectly well).
*Update*
I was wondering where all the scratches from my discs were comming from... When I talk about these scratches, I don't mean small ones I mean circular ones, Yes, the worst kind of scratch you could get on your CD. I found out that they were coming from the discman when shaken too hard. This causes the cd to come in contact with the bottom of the inside of the discman and scratch the disc. Normally it's ok when you I'm not using it but when you are playing a CD and you whack/shake the discman real hard it happens!
