jmar5553's Full Review: Sony Grand WEGA KF-42WE610 42 in. HDTV-Ready LCD T...
After months of research & deliberation I narrowed down my HDTV search to the Sony 42" rear projection LCD & the Samsung HLP 4663W, which is a 46" DLP rear projection. To my eye, the Sony had a more realistic, richer (3-D like) HD picture, but I was worried about all of the complaints relating to bulb malfunction I read on this & other sites. Once I came to the conclusion that problem was corrected & that DLP is a more complex (more things can go wrong) technology, I bought the Sony about 1 mo. ago & I have no regrets.
I have a Comcast HD cable box. The HD picture is just fantastic!! As good as I saw on the display models in the retail stores. I'm also very pleased with the SD picture. This TV replaced a 46" rear projection Zenith . If you are going from a direct view to a RPTV, you will lose some picture sharpness in the SD format no matter what make of TV. So compared to my old 46", the SD picture is improved. The only time it breaks down is viewing a sporting event when the camera is taking a wide angle shot. You lose some sharpness. Even then the Sony allows you to correct for this by going to the 4:3 mode. I also have a Monster Home Theater power strip that I believe improves the SD reception. 4 viewing modes are available to enhance SD viewing.
Also on the plus side are the sound quality, availability of 10 connectors, including 1 DVI & 2 component. The viewing angle is very wide. You don't want this set sitting too low as the picture will break down. Mine is on a stand that is almost 21" high. 2 other pluses for me: The manual is well written & the TV is made right here in Western PA.
On the down side, it takes about 45 secs. for the picture to become sharp when turning the TV on. There is no HDMI connection. (The just released 2005 model has this along with a built-in HD tuner for only a $100 price increase. I should have waited about a month because these are nice features for a little but more money.) I also notice that when watching fast action, like hockey or football, the image blurs sightly. This happens even in the HD mode. More so in SD. (Now this is viewing with a critical eye.) You also have the trouble prone past to factor in. No reliability problems so far.
