I have them, I think they are great. I am no audiophile or bose basher/worshiper. Just a guy who bought em and likes em

he is notorious for bashing and and all Bose products he can find reviews for. I just ignore him.

The truth is that these really are great speakers that have lows so deep and tight they best 3-piece speakers of the same price.

Great mids and highs too.. I bought a pair for a friend.

I myself have the new companion 3 :-P

I found soupcraze's same review on at least two other sites. It was a 'cut and paste' job on both.

Looks like you were right about being a Bose Basher.

Bose bashers are all the same... (Reply to this comment)

I have the MediaMates, and I also have other audio gear in the home from manufacturers such as Denon and ADCOM. For what I use the MediaMates for, they are very good. Not everyone wants a subwoofer for their computer setup. Personally, I have little space and I was looking for a 2-piece speaker system. I certainly didn't want SIX speakers cluttering my desk area, such as would be the case with a 5.1 system.

For listening to music at reasonable noise levels, the MediaMates sound very pleasing to the ear. In my opinion, they do create a wide soundstage for such small speakers. Also, I have never heard another 2-piece system as small as the MediaMates that produced the kind of bass they manage to kick out.

After reading your review, you bias against Bose in general comes through crystal clear. There are a lot of Bose bashers out there who bash the company much like computer users love to bash Microsoft. They are the market leader, and they take a lot of slack over it. You also mentioned that Bose claims the MediaMates sound "awesome". I didn't see that claim anywhere on their website. Rather, they claim "Full-range drivers produce rich sound you might not expect from such small speakers". Nor would I imagine they would say that the MediaMates sound as good as the Magnepans. That is a ridiculous comment, and doesn't belong in a review such as this.

For what it's worth, comparing any of the speakers you mentioned at Best Buy is an incredibly flawed approach. The space in which you are auditioning the speakers is so large, that the smaller speakers are at a serious disadvantage. Any speaker with a sub is going to sound better, and more "full" in that environment. The MediaMates will sound VERY different at home, especially due to the fact that they were designed as near-field monitors for use in a small home or office environment.

Also, it is obvious from reading your review that you are no expert. There are actually many very good reasons to use paper-based drivers in speakers, and the use of this material in no way results in poor and unrealistic midrange. That just isn't true at all, as there is no correlation between the two whatsoever. If anything, paper cones are known to be non-resonant, so they don't color the source material. Something else you should know is that many very well respected speakers on the market today still use paper cones - and neither those cones nor the Bose cones are simply paper. They are all reinforced with other materials to make the paper more rigid and durable, and paper cones last a long time in the home. Obviously, for car speakers that could get wet, there are better choices. Do some searching on paper cones on the web, and you may just change your mind about how inferior the material is. Many find paper cones to produce a warm and natural sound. In fact, there are many experts out there who bash polypropylene due to the fact that heat can soften the material over time. Lastly, there are many well-respected speaker manufacturers out there today that use treated paper cones, such as Jamo, JBL, M&K, Sonus-Faber, NHT, and KEF to name just a few.

What can I say. I am simply sick and tired of reading reviews from people who are simply out there to bash Bose. It is obvious from the tone of your review that you don't like the company at all. Also, you wrote "When I tried these out in the store, just about every system managed to outperform it and sounded much better, even a cheaper one". Therefore, I find the fact that you purchased these speakers highly suspect. Obviously, I have no proof, but after the in-store experience you say you had, why on earth would you go through the trouble of purchasing them? It makes no sense at all.

Being a Bose basher online is so not original anymore. Why not funnel your energy elsewhere, especially since the people here who actually purchased the MediaMates are quite satisfied with their performance, including myself.

The only thing I would agree with in your review is the fact that they are not the most aesthetically pleasing speakers. However, there are just as many speakers out there that are so "overstyled" that they look even worse (and a lot more "chintzy". If you are middle-aged, which most Bose buyers seem to be, the MediaMates are going to look a lot better on a desk than some of the other wacky designs out there.

I've had these. I'm a Bose fan but these were not up to the standards to what I thought Bose speakers should be. Good review on them.
