I bought this fryer after having tried a Euro Pro fryer and returning it. See my review of that unit here.
Construction and design:
The Waring Pro is a very well constructed unit. The controls feel solid and the parts fit well. The unit is somewhat bigger than some competitors, but unless you need to keep it on your counter-top, the size shouldn't be a deal breaker. I really like the lid design -- it is dome-shaped to keep condensation from dripping back into the oil, instead it guides it down to the sides of the lid into a small well preventing dangerous spatters. Also, while the power cord uses a magnet in its design to allow quick breakaway for safety, it is still strong enough to connect securely and resist slight tugs on the cord. The frying basket at first glance seems small, but is deceiving since it's quite wide. It holds a good amount of food, while being small enough to keep you from mistakenly putting too much food in the basket. The controls are two large rotary dials -- one controlling the heat setting and another for a countdown timer. There is a large metal toggle switch to control the main power. It clicks on and off with positive, satisfying "click". Also on the panel are two indicator lights, a red one for power and a green "ready" light to tell you when the oil reaches the set temperature.
Usage:
The most impressive part of this fryer is the amazingly powerful heating element. It is submerged in the oil itself to provide the fastest heat response and accurate temperature. However, it runs at 1800 watts, so having any other appliance running on the same circuit at the same time may cause problems. The plus side of that 1800 watts is the lightning fast heat recovery. I have placed nearly a pound of chicken wings in the fryer all at once, and the "ready" light comes back on within a minute and a half.
Checking the temperature with another thermometer, I found that the set temperature and the actual temperature were less than 10 degrees different. There is enough "reserve" at the top end of the dial so setting a few extra degrees to make up for the difference was no problem.
Overall:
This unit is wonderful. It has the power and utility to turn out fried foods rivaling a commercial Fry-O-Lator. It's fantastic heating ability ensures that the oil stays at temperature so that your food doesn't absorb the cooking oil. It disassembles easily and cleans up well.
