| naphtalia's Full Review: White Linen2.0oz Eau De Perfume Spray by Estee Lau... |
The weather has been warm in Southern California and it feels like spring. I decided I wanted a nice, light scent and my mother suggested I try her Estee Lauder White Linen. I took a sniff from the bottle and didn't particularly like the aroma, but I learned long ago that my body chemistry makes many unpleasant in the bottle scents smell wonderful once they hit skin. It was a dab-on bottle, not a spray bottle so I distributed a few drops on the inside of each wrist, behind each ear and behind each knee. I was good to go...except for one thing. This stuff stank to high heaven on me! It smelled worse on me than it did in the bottle!...and that's saying something.
Estee Lauder released its White Linen line of perfume, lotions, powders, etc. back in 1978. The top note that I got from it was kerosene and apricots - not my favorite combination. My mother says she gets more citrus and jasmine on herself.
White Linen is advertised as a floral/fresh scent and so unsurprisingly, its middle notes are supposed to be rose, violets, and amber. A half hour after applying, I could still smell kerosene although I was starting to feel that the apricots were fading into a rose scent. By the time an hour had passed, the kerosene had finally faded into nothingness. It was replaced by a clean, cedary, mossy aroma. I had finally reached a point where I could go out without people wrinkling their noses at my perfume.
I know that perfumes smell different on different individuals. Clearly, White Linen has an altogether too individual stench when applied to me. Estee Lauder says that it should reflect the aroma of white sheets dried in a summer breeze. For me, it reflected the aroma of old camping equipment.
I will say that this smells much better on my mother than on myself. I, however, can not recommend it. Even on my mother, in my opinion, the scent is not special. At least on her, however, it isn't gaseous.
If White Linen does interest you, try a bit at the perfume counter at your favorite department store. Remember, a little dab will do ya!
