Hi,
I worked at Xerox for 3 years and I got to know the DC40 very well. I used it for Quality Assurance purposes. I used to test software for a Digital Front End server from EFI called the Fiery Server. It is a network controller box that lets a user print from their computer to the copier. I also used the DC40 for personal use. I also used the copier at Kinkos a few year back and it got a lot of use.
I can tell you that I love working on the DC40. The one's I worked on were a bit older, but they do the same things as the new ones do now. The quality was great on the older ones that I used, but I can promise you that the quality is I'm sure outstanding on the newer ones.
The DC40 was introduced around 1996, and blew away the competition since there wasn't a good quality, fast copier around at that time.
The copier itself is pretty intense and takes a while to get to know, but when you do, the features are outstanding.
The basics are that it has 3 trays that support letter, 11x17, legal, A3,A4 and other paper sizes. The Bypass tray can support any size, including Card stock, Transparencies and 12x18. The copier runs 40 ppm on letter and about 25 ppm when duplexing and using card stock. The copier has a nice, clear interface that is easy to navigate around. It has the basic tab to chose paper supply, plus added features that lets the user chose color saturation, sharpness, print quality and so on.
There are also optional features such as a document feeder for the top or an edit pad. Those additions can be costly and the document feeder is kind of slow. It's not really meant for being just a straight copying machine. The full advantage is to use it in a print shop or a place like Kinko's that use the networked Fiery server with it. It can get a lot of use as a stand alone copier.
The areas that it jams are pretty accessible, but I must say that if the copier isn't at room temperature, look out for static electricity. You really need to have this copier in a room all by itself with a humidifier and the door closed. Somewhere under diagnostics it has a temperature and humidity setting to let you know what it's set at. It's important to read the manual that comes with it. But, other than that the DC40 will make your workload a whole lot easier and with a coverage plan from Xerox, it will be a great package. Keep up with the maintenance and the great service that Xerox gives and you will be making fast color copies in no time.
