| coldsteel7's Full Review: Chick-fil-A |
Most fast-food restaurants try to cover as many bases as they can. Your typical burger joint sells chicken sandwiches, fish squares, tacos, and any other thing they can market successfully. Generally speaking, fast-food restaurants that concentrate on one product tend to do a better job. This is true for Chick-fil-A. Even Kentucky Fried Chicken goes further beyond the basic menu you'll find at Chick-fil-A.
A Good Fried Chicken Breast Sandwich
Regardless of what you find on the menu, this is where it really begins and ends. A solid, delicious, lightly-breaded chicken sandwich with a pickle on it. If you want, you can add mayo or other condiments, but it all begins with a basic sandwich. This sandwich is really the base for the rest of the menu. In fact, locally, Chick-fil-A sponsors our PTA with chicken sandwich sales, which always tend to do very well.
Ligher Fare
Chick-fil-A would certainly be missing a trick if they didn't cater to the lighter menu option crowd. For people watching their calories, Chick-fil-A offers several wraps (Spicy Chicken Cool Wrap, Chargrilled Chicken Cool Wrap and Chicken Caesar Cool Wrap). Chick-fil-A also has a short selection of delicious salads (Chargrilled Chicken Garden Salad, Chicken-n-Strips Salad and Southwest Chargrilled Salad). The have a widevariety of dressings for these salads including fattening but delicious dressings as well as the reduced calorie, reduced fat selections. Chick-fil-A also has a chargrilled chicken sandwich on a golden wheat bun which is healthier than the fried version. If you prefer the fried version, you can still get it on the whole wheat bun for a small surcharge.
Chicken Nuggets
As I stated, the chicken sandwich is the cornerstone of this business. Using the same breading for the chicken sandwich, Chick-fil-A delivers a meaty nugget just the right size for dipping. The chicken nuggets really amount to bite-sized chunks of the chicken sandwich. There are no "pieces parts" in the chicken nuggets. The chicken nuggets also come in a party tray size, which is always popular at parties. I have served these at two parties, and never have leftovers.
Waffle Fries
When it comes to french fries, I believe a lot of people would agree with me that nobody can touch McDonald's. Having said that, Chick-fil-A french fries are a distant second (but still second in my book). The waffle fries have a hearty potato taste, and come in ample serving sizes. None of those tiny french fry bags that you get at some restaurants. I like to dip the french fries in Chick-fil-A Buffalo sauce.
Forget the Soft Drinks
If you eat at Chick-fil-A, you should consider skipping the Coca-Cola products, opting instead for their freshly squeezed lemonade or sweet tea. The lemonade, surprisingly, also comes in a fresh-squeezed DIET version. The diet lemonade is thirst quenchingly good. Chick-fil-A is a southern restaurant chain (originating in the Atlanta area). No southern restaurant has street cred, unless they have good sweet tea. Chick-fil-A sweet tea is the gold standard of restaurant sweet tea. They sell their tea by the gallon, too (although it is a bit expensive), but definitely worth it for tea lovers. On a cautionary note, northerners might find the sweet tea a bit too sweet...it's how we do it in the south.
Ice Dream
Chick-fil-A ice dream is the base of their dessert menu (which also includes non-ice-cream selections (Cheesecake, Lemon Pie and fudge brownies). The ice cream is similar to Dairy Queen soft-serve, but has a slightly odd texture, and creamy flavor. This ice cream is delicious enough by itself, but is also the base of their hearty milkshakes (Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry, Cookies and Cream, and sometimes even Mint Cookies and Cream).
Breakfast, too
I have only eaten breakfast at Chick-fil-A once. I had the Chicken minis, which are miniature chicken biscuits made with the chicken nuggets. They came with a side order of hashbrowns which were okay, but not exceptional. The biscuits were light and flavorful, making for a filling breakfast. The breakfast menu is the only place where Chick-fil-A strays from the chicken only menu...they offer the standard sausage biscuits or bacon egg and cheese biscuits. Chick-fil-A also has cinnamon minis, which is really like a cinnamon roll that is breakable into smaller bite-sized pieces. I didn't care much for this product.
Final Observations
Chick-fil-A does chicken, and they do it the way it's meant to be done. No chicken pieces like other fried chicken joints, just fried or grilled chicken sandwiches with a few other menu options. By concentrating on a limited menu, Chick-fil-A manages to deliver a superior product.
