Cracker Barrel: More Then Just a Restaurant
by Bryan_Carey | Apr 24 '01
Pros: Atmosphere; Country Store keeps you occupied while you wait for a seat.
Cons: There's almost always a wait

Cracker Barrel is mighty fine (Reply to this comment)

Delicious review of one of my favorite restaurants bar none! Kinda makes me want to hop in the car and drive up to Erie, an hour away, where our "local" Cracker Barrel is. Good points about the crafts store attached to the restaurant. And the food is "soul food" for me, a Southerner and Texan. You're certainly correct about not being able to get greens much up here, at least in a restaurant setting:). Sometimes when my husband and I go to Cracker Barrel I get a double order of greens for that very reason.

Excellent portrayal of the Cracker Barrel's decor, menu, and atmosphere!

Thank you--

I loved reading this review. I have been to Cracker Barrel several times in my life. Actually on a trip to Canada (while driving) it was pretty much the only restaurant we went to because everyone found something that they liked, which is hard when you are traveling with 13 people in two mini vans. :)

After reading your review I missed going into a Cracker Barrel. I will have to stop by one soon.

Thanks.

Wonderful review...though I don't quite share your enthusiasm for Cracker Barrel. Tried it for the first and second time earlier this year and I'm not going back And yes, breakfast was confusing! And I had the exceptionally bad timing of exclaiming to my eating companion "Does EVERYTHING have to come with grits or gravy?!?!" just as the waitress arrived behind me. oops. She looked at me like I had three heads. I'm sure she went back to the kitchen mumbling something about strange Northerners :)
The service was excellent though :)

In Galup, New Mexico, last year. It was pretty good... service was a little slow, but that seems to be due -- in part -- to the fact that this restaurant was one of the most popular in town.

Another great review Bryan.

I agree! I have never been disappointed either, and I adore the store! My mom has actually made my dad go out of the way upon seeing one of those signs, lol. But it's always well worth it. Your opinion was very thorough and well written. Keep up the good work!

I miss those places. (Reply to this comment)

Unfortunately, they don't have them here in Alaska. Even more unfortunately, I wouldn't patronize them if they did. Began boycotting them back in the 80s when their prejudice against gay people was publicized. Haven't heard that their practice of firing/refusing to hire homosexual employees has been changed, so I guess I'll just have to continue to get my "down-home" cooking from my own kitchen.

However, didn't mean to take away from your review. You did an excellent job of detailing all the things I do miss. Thanks -- Kristin

Although I don't eat at these places too often.
Actually, never, unless someone drags me to one (as you could see from my Chicago tourist reviews).

Given your knowledge of chain restaurants, you may find my Macaroni Grill and White Castle reviews amusing.

Anyway, good to be reading your stuff again. I've been away for a while.

Actually, Cracker Barrel proudly proclaims that it has *no* menu items (even salads, desserts, or bread) that are vegetarian.

A side from the fact that I eat none of the food ;-) the atmosphere is nice.

I've only been here once... (Reply to this comment)

& that was several years ago. I went for dinner but had a hard time finding something on the menu since I am a vegetarian. I was in the mood for a simple veggie omelet but there was nothing like it on the menu (just a lot of MEAT choices ... yuck!). Anyway, I asked our server if I could have something vegetarian & they did so without a fuss. It tasted great & we were very pleased w/ our meal. So, if you do not eat meat just ask your server for something else & you'll be happy.

on one of my favorite eatery/craft store combinations! I believe you captured all the strong points very well! The only thing I would add is that the CB located here in Upstate NY could use a bit more extension on their specials, but other than that, I'm more than happy!
