Saturday was my birthday. My husband and I decided to drop the girls off at Grandma's for the night. We wanted to go out for dinner. We decided to go somewhere that served cocktails instead of "happy meals". This doesn't happen very often, as my girls are ten and four- happy meals are usually a requirement.
My husband's friends suggested we try J.Alexander's. This was our first time dining here, but had no reservations about it. We arrived around eight o'clock. The hostess gave us a beeper and seated us in the bar area, which I might add - was a nice large, comfortable area. We had a drink and talked for about twenty minutes, and then we were seated at our table. No one likes to wait, but I thought we were seated in a timely manner.
The restaurant has a very warm, romantic atmosphere. The chefs are in full view as you walk in the front door, allowing you to see them in action. They use very dim lighting in the restaurant, making it cozy. All of the furnishings are dark brown - tables, chairs, booths, etc...
The menu offers a wide variety of foods,including several types of pasta dishes, several salads, chicken, steaks, seafood, carrot cake, chocolate cake, and several side dishes. I was impressed with the menu, it is very easy to read and all prices are clearly stated. They also provide you with a full wine list.
My husband ordered the Prime Rib sandwich with fries. It was cooked just the way he ordered it, served with aus jus sauce. I had the New York Strip steak dinner, served with salad of my choice, and potato of my choice.(caesar salad and loaded baked potato) Everything was cooked to perfection, and was served quickly. Our waitress was very attentive, she would check on us frequently. We never ran out of drinks, every time our glasses were half full / half empty she would bring more refills.
Our overall experience at J. Alexander's was very impressive.The atmosphere was nice. The staff was very attentive. And the food was very delicious. The only thing I will do different next time is order a smaller entree, and save room for dessert.

They offer a variety of chicken, steaks, seafood, side dishes, and desserts. Everything we ordered was great.
Service:
The service was above average.
Decor:
The restaurant was classy but casual.
