First, let me warn you - this review is probably biased. I worked in various management capacities for Steak 'n Shake for almost 11 years, until last November. I left the restaurant chain to pursue other things, and I have pretty positive feelings about the company.Famous for Steakburgers - the steakburgers are made with high-quality beef, lower in fat content than most other burgers. They are quick-seared on a flat grill and served on toasted buns or specialty breads. You can order an original steakburger single, double, or triple. The Frisco Melt is really delicious and very popular; it has two steakburger patties with Swiss and American cheeses, lettuce, tomato, and a tangy sauce on grilled sourdough bread. Be warned, though - it is a messy sandwich, not recommended for eating on the road! They offer several other specialty burgers, including the Mushroom & Swiss, Cheddar & Bacon, American Melt, Patty Melt, and others.
Side items offered include cottage cheese, coleslaw, baked beans, french fries, onion rings, small dinner salad, and soup. For an additional charge, you can pick any two sides and make your sandwich a platter.
If you prefer lighter fare, SnS offers several salads, grilled chicken sandwiches, tuna salad, and very good soups. The vegetable beef soup is offered daily and is very good, with chunks of beef and veggies. The "soup of the day" rotates and is offered in addition to the vegetable beef soup. The taco salad is available with beef or chicken and is quite tasty.
The chili is very popular at SnS. There are several chili items available - with or without spaghetti. If you order a Chili Mac, there is no chili on it, just chili beef and sauce on spaghetti. The 3-Way and 5-Way have chili, extra chili meat, and sauce on spaghetti (plus shredded cheese for the 5-Way).
The breakfast at Steak 'n Shake is very good and very reasonably priced. Most of the restaurants are open 24 hours, but breakfast is served during "breakfast hours only" which usually means from 11 p.m. until 11 a.m. Since most people think only of steakburgers and milk shakes when they think of SnS, breakfast is typically a very slow time, which usually means you get really fast service in a nice quiet atmosphere. You can order your eggs any way you like them and their bacon and sausage patties are very tasty. Other breakfast options include pancakes, biscuits and gravy, bagels, breakfast sandwiches, and deep-fried hash brown potato rounds. I recommend the bagel sandwich if you are on the road - it comes with egg, cheese and either a sausage patty or two slices of bacon. The pancakes are also very good - they have a sort of vanilla cake flavor.
SnS also has a Kid's Menu including the following items: steakburger, grilled cheese, 2 chicken fingers, and a small Chili Mac. The two sandwiches are exactly the same as the adult versions, but are cut in half on the plate (or in the box).
And finally, the Milk Shakes - they really are hand-dipped to order, which explains why a milk shake often takes as long as the food to arrive. When there are thirty or more milk shakes ordered (not at all uncommon), those shake makers are dipping their hearts out, believe me! The good news is, these shakes are worth the wait. And since I left SnS, they have started offering hot caramel (and hot fudge) as an addition to a milkshake - it is sinfully delicious!
Here's a hint for carryout or drive thru if you are in a hurry - call your order in at least 20-30 minutes ahead of time and tell them what time you will be in to pick it up. That way, your food is ready when you arrive.
Although I no longer work for SnS, I still eat there on occasion. I like the fact that you can actually see your food being prepared. Everything has to be clean and sanitary. I enjoy sitting at the counter and watching my food being prepared.
I have worked in and visited many SnS restaurants around the country and the only negative I have is that sometimes the service is slow. It really depends on the management team of the particular unit. Some are really good and some, well, they could use some help.
I do recommend SnS for a delicious burger cooked to order and don't forget your milk shake!
