| Dionne25's Full Review: Madison Square Garden |
I've been to Madison Square Garden on many occasions. I've attended many basketball games (both college and professional); heck, my high school graduation was held at The Paramount which is located in MSG.
When I was a student at St. John's University, I purchased season tickets to all the Red Storm games. I was a member of Student Government, and we were allotted court level seats behind the Red Storm foul line (which was awesome). Each game that we attended was filled with excitement. We all cheered when SJU was winning and would let the opposing team have it when they made foul shots. There was never a dull moment when St. John's played at the Garden.
Last August, I had the chance to see the NY Liberty play against the Houston Comets (which the Liberty won, by the way - I forgot the score though). It was the first Liberty game I attended (and still is as a matter of fact). We were in the nosebleed seats; all the way at the back. We could barely make out Weatherspoon on the court, but man, what a game that was. The Liberty in the first half were down a few points, but by the second half, it was all Liberty. The Comets were just eating dust from the gals, it was great.
I know so far I haven't really said much about the overall appearance of the Garden itself, but to get an idea of what goes on there, you have to understand the fans. As I've said in my reviews of both Shea and Yankee Stadiums, the fans go wild for their team and will scream and shout to the highest mountain. I think that's what makes the games more interesting and exciting.
As for the Garden, what can I say? It's a NY landmark. People come from all over the world to get a glimpse of the Garden. Hey, it's been used in many movies and even Road Rules got in on the action a few years back. The overall appearance of the Garden is pretty nice. The court, in my opinion, looks rather small in person than it may look on television. When I had court level seats through St. John's, I sometimes thought I was playing the game with the guys.
I think what's so great about The Garden is that it houses so many teams...The Knicks, The Red Storm, The Liberty, The Rangers. I haven't been to a Rangers game (I'm not too fond of hockey - don't brow beat me), but I can only imagine what the action is like to watch Messier and even the Great One, Mr. Wayne "99" Gretsky himself on the ice. I'm sure all you hockey fans out there have many wonderful stories on those games.
Be prepared to spend money though. For the life of me, I can't understand why the cost of food, tickets, and souvenirs have to cost more than some mortgages. We're New Yorkers, yes, but we don't have Trump as a last name. Good grief.
Transportation is very easy at the Garden. Many of the major subways (A,C,E,2,3,4,5,6), the Long Island Railroad, NJ Transit and Amtrak all stop at Penn Station. You don't even have to go outside, you follow the signs to the Garden and you're there. I would advise not to drive to the Garden unless you absolutely have to. Parking is a pain, expensive and may cause you to get gray hairs. Avoid it at all costs (unless you're Trump that is.)
I suggest if you're ever in the City to check out the Garden. Even if you can't catch a game, you can still take in the ambiance as well as visit some of the stores that are there. Who knows, you might even get lucky, but check it out, regardless.
